Utilization of Portland cement with limestone powder and cement kiln dust for stabilization/solidification of oil-contaminated marl soil

Yassir M. H. Mustafa et al.

Summary: The study utilized stabilization/solidification (S/S) technique to treat contaminated soils, demonstrating that all treated mixtures met the strength criterion of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and showed improvements in both geotechnical properties and environmental characteristics. Additionally, analyses using scanning electron microscope (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were conducted to elucidate microstructural changes in the stabilized soils.

Triggering and motion of landslides

Eduardo E. Alonso

Summary: This paper analyzes the dynamic behavior of landslides with a well-defined failure surface and discusses procedures for identifying velocity and runout once stability is lost. By contrasting case studies with theoretical developments, it is evident that phenomena such as creeping motion and rapid sliding are crucial in landslide research.

Application of the dynamic cone penetrometer test for determining the geotechnical characteristics of marl soils treated by lime

Amir Hossein Vakili et al.

Summary: This study explored the correlation between different soil parameters by conducting DCP tests and conventional tests, finding that adding 5% lime to marl soil samples can increase strength and decrease DPI, but further lime addition has a negative effect. The use of DCP test as a cheap and easy-to-use method can provide a comprehensive view of soil behavior in civil engineering projects.

Effect of EPS beads in lightening a typical zeolite and cement-treated sand

Aghileh Khajeh et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the influence of EPS beads inclusion on the strength properties of stabilized poorly-graded sands. It was found that replacing 30% of cement with zeolite significantly improved the UCS and CBR values, compensating for the reduction observed with the use of EPS beads. Additionally, a power equation was proposed to estimate the UCS and CBR values based on the minimum amount of CaO or the sum of Al2O3 and SiO2 in the mixture.

Incorporation of Volcanic Ash for Enhanced Treatment of a Cement-Stabilized Clayey Soil

Mahdi Salimi et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the effect of volcanic ash on the improvement of cement performance in clay stabilization, finding that the addition of volcanic ash significantly enhanced the mechanical properties of the mixture and reduced the plasticity index. The optimal mixture of 6% cement and 15% volcanic ash showed nearly twice the increase in UCS and CBR values after 28 days.

Hydraulic conductivity of gravelly soils with various coarse particle contents subjected to freeze-thaw cycles

Yang Lu et al.

Summary: The hydraulic conductivity of gravelly soils is significantly influenced by factors such as gravel content, confining stress, number of F-T cycles, and initial water content. The presence of gravel particles alters the soil structure, leading to a significant increase in water conductivity.

Fatigue Life of Green Stabilized Fiber-Reinforced Sulfate-Rich Dispersive Soil

Nilo Cesar Consoli et al.

Summary: Sulfate-rich dispersive soils can damage civil engineering projects, and the usual method to reduce erosion is to use calcium-based stabilizers, which can form expansive minerals when combined with sulfates. This study aims to develop alternative stabilizers and reinforcements to address these issues.
