Correlation between surface concentration of chloride ions and chloride deposition rate in concrete

Petr Lehner et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the correlation between chloride evaluation in concrete using the modified chloride penetration test and chloride evaluation in the air using the dry plate method. Through long-term exposure of concrete samples in two different microclimates in the Czech Republic, it was found that there was good agreement in chloride increase and decrease patterns between the two evaluation methods. Additionally, the leaching effect of chlorides from upper layers of concrete was observed during the measurements.

Effect of pre-existing longitudinal and transverse corrosion cracks on the flexural behaviour of corroded RC beams

Hussein Nasser et al.

Summary: The study revealed that transverse cracks cause localized section loss, leading to nonlinearity in the relation between longitudinal crack widths and section loss. Additionally, it was found that longitudinal corrosion cracks reduce the number of flexural cracks, while transverse cracks create weak points that trigger beam failure. Furthermore, transverse corrosion cracks may lead to misaligned minimum cross-sections on the tensile rebars, affecting the failure mechanism.

Developing a sustainable concrete incorporating bentonite clay and silica fume: Mechanical and durability performance

Muhammad Ashraf et al.

Summary: This study investigates the use of bentonite clay (BC) and silica fume (SF) as partial replacements of cement in concrete. The results show that adding SF improves compressive strength, and BC and SF enhance pore structures and resistance against sulfate attack and chloride ingress. The proposed empirical formulations using machine learning techniques accurately predict the properties of concrete. Furthermore, BC and SF can reduce carbon emissions, making the proposed concrete mixtures environmentally viable for the construction sector.

Bond degradation of non-uniformly corroded steel rebars in concrete

Chuanqing Fu et al.

Summary: The orientation of the longitudinal rib and the thickness of the concrete cover play a vital role in determining the cracking patterns of corrosion-induced cracks. Non-uniform corrosion significantly degrades bond performance, with this phenomenon becoming more pronounced as corrosion levels increase. The beneficial improvements caused by the expansive rust on the bond performance greatly depend on the degree of concrete constraint and corrosion level.

Chloride penetration in freeze-thaw induced cracking concrete: A numerical study

Lin-jie Li et al.

Summary: A multi-phase numerical model is proposed in this study to investigate chloride transport in concrete under freeze-thaw cycles, considering pore structure development and crack propagation. The model is verified against experiments and factors affecting chloride transport, such as freeze-thaw cycles, crack width, porosity, connectivity, and pore diameter factor, are elaborated to provide insights for durability design of reinforced concrete structures in cold or marine regions.

Electrochemical deposition method for load-induced crack repair of reinforced concrete structures: A numerical study

Zhaozheng Meng et al.

Summary: This study conducted a comprehensive numerical analysis of key processes in electrochemical deposition treatment, revealing their fundamental mechanisms. A multi-phase cracking model was developed, and the interactions among ions in concrete composites were elaborated. The results showed that a current density of 0.5 A/m(2) had the best repair effect, but the chloride removal efficiency was not ideal, while increasing ambient temperature could promote crack repair rate.
