Tracking spatiotemporal dynamics of irrigated croplands in China from 2000 to 2019 through the synergy of remote sensing, statistics, and historical irrigation datasets

Chao Zhang et al.

Summary: This study proposed a two-step strategy to map annual irrigated areas in China from 2000 to 2019. The results showed that the total irrigated area in China increased by 24.8%, mainly in the northern region, due to land reclamation and improved irrigation infrastructure.

Global maps of cropland extent and change show accelerated cropland expansion in the twenty-first century

Peter Potapov et al.

Summary: High-resolution satellite observations are essential for monitoring global progress towards Sustainable Development Goals. The study shows that global cropland area increased by 9% in the first two decades of the twenty-first century, while per-capita cropland area decreased by 10%. This was primarily due to agricultural expansion in Africa and South America, leading to conflicts with the goal of protecting terrestrial ecosystems. Despite a decrease in per-capita cropland area, per-capita annual cropland net primary production increased by 3.5% due to intensified agricultural land use.

Validation of the US Geological Survey's Land Change Monitoring, Assessment and Projection (LCMAP) Collection 1.0 annual land cover products 1985-2017

Stephen V. Stehman et al.

Summary: The US Geological Survey has released annual land cover and land cover change products for the CONUS, with an overall accuracy of 82.5% as assessed by a reference sample dataset. Accuracy varies by land cover class, with lower accuracy in the eastern US, and specific user and producer accuracies were reported for different land cover types. Change accuracy improved when allowing for a +/- 2-year window for agreement, and footprint accuracy for areas experiencing land cover change was reported.

A million kernels of truth: Insights into scalable satellite maize yield mapping and yield gap analysis from an extensive ground dataset in the US Corn

Jillian M. Deines et al.

Summary: Satellite-derived crop yield maps, evaluated using a large dataset of maize field observations, showed efficient and accurate sub-field yield estimation using the SCYM model. The study found that satellite-based yield estimates were sensitive to management and environmental factors, but lacked accuracy in representing certain soil quality and planting date variations. Random forest models demonstrated comparable performance to SCYM when trained on sufficient ground observations. Results suggest that satellite yield maps are valuable for analyzing long-term yield trends and yield gap assessments.

Global distribution, trends, and drivers of flash drought occurrence

Jordan Christian et al.

Summary: Flash droughts are devastating and difficult to predict, impacting agriculture, water resources, ecosystems, and the human environment. Global hotspots of flash drought, driven by evaporative demand and precipitation deficits, exist in various regions. From 1980-2015, six regions experienced a significant increase in flash drought occurrences, while three regions saw a significant decline. More research is needed to understand the regional drivers of flash drought and its socio-economic impacts.

The 30 m annual land cover dataset and its dynamics in China from 1990 to 2019

Jie Yang et al.

Summary: Land cover (LC) plays a crucial role in energy exchange and environmental impact. Rapid changes in land cover in China necessitate fine-scale monitoring. A new dataset, CLCD, based on Landsat data on the Google Earth Engine platform provides valuable insights into China's land cover dynamics from 1990 to 2019.

GLC_FCS30: global land-cover product with fine classification system at 30m using time-series Landsat imagery

Xiao Zhang et al.

Summary: This study developed a novel global 30m land-cover classification system for 2015 by combining Landsat imagery and high-quality training data, achieving high accuracy. The GLC_FCS30-2015 product provides more detailed spatial information and a wider variety of land-cover types compared to other existing products, making it a valuable resource for global land-cover analysis.
