Sales Disclosure and Pricing Policies in the Presence of Social Learning

Rui Zheng et al.

Summary: In a monopoly market, disclosing sales quantities and enhancing social learning are always beneficial for a firm. With an increase in the intensity of social learning, a monopoly firm has a higher incentive to decrease the initial price of a product to attract early buyers. However, consumer surplus may decrease if consumers' purchase intentions are strongly driven by historical sales quantities.

Multidimensional Observational Learning in Social Networks: Theory and Experimental Evidence

Liangfei Qiu et al.

Summary: This study examines how product characteristics and the type of information provider impact purchase decisions in a social network setting. Results show that learning from strangers has a stronger effect for vertically differentiated products compared to horizontally differentiated products, while learning from friends does not depend on product differentiation. Additionally, the influence of social ties increases with tie strength for horizontally differentiated products.
