A hidden precipitation scenario of the θ'-phase in Al-Cu alloys

L. Zhou et al.

Summary: The theta'-phase in Al-Cu alloys has its own high-temperature precursors with similar morphology but different structures, which can form at elevated aging temperatures and eventually transform into the theta'-phase. This study provides a clear precipitation scenario for the formation of the theta'-phase in Al-Cu alloys at high aging temperatures.

Prediction of shear strength of cluster-strengthened aluminum with multi-scale approach describing transition from cutting to bypass of precipitates by dislocations

E. V. Fomin et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the strength of clusters in aluminum alloy with copper content ranging from 20-100% depends on the number of copper atoms rather than the direct influence of copper concentration. Introducing copper-containing clusters into aluminum alloy can reduce the inhomogeneity of plastic deformation and aligns with experimental results.

The unique hybrid precipitate in a peak-aged Al-Cu-Mg-Ag alloy

M. R. Gazizov et al.

Summary: Research on the prevalent hardening phase forming in an Al-Cu-Mg-Ag alloy after peak-aging at 150 and 190 degrees C using transmission electron microscopy methods revealed a hybrid precipitate with plate morphology on {111} Al planes, consisting of orthorhombic and hexagonal structural fragments. Density functional theory calculations suggested that hybridization reduces structural incompatibility of the plates with the matrix, and the incorporation of Cu, Mg, and Ag in the structure reduces its formation enthalpy.

Modeling peak-aged precipitate strengthening in Al-Mg-Si alloys

Yi Hu et al.

Summary: Strengthening in Al-Mg-Si alloys by needle-shaped beta'' precipitates is crucial, with computational studies showing that Orowan looping only sets an upper bound for the CRSS even at peak aging. Further quantitative progress in understanding the strengthening mechanism requires detailed modeling of precipitate shearing.

Influence of θ′ Phase Cutting on Precipitate Hardening of Al-Cu Alloy during Prolonged Plastic Deformation: Molecular Dynamics and Continuum Modeling

Vasiliy S. Krasnikov et al.

Summary: The study investigates the prolonged plastic deformation of aluminum containing theta' phase using a multistage approach combining MD, CM, and DDD. It is found that damage to the crystal structure of inclusions and activation of cross-slip of dislocation segments lead to a decrease in acting stresses in the MD system. The softening effect of inclusions is further introduced into the dislocation-precipitate interaction, causing a decrease in flow stress during deformation.
