Neural Correlates Associated With Suicide and Nonsuicidal Self-injury in Youth

Randy P. Auerbach et al.

Summary: Currently, there is no definitive neural marker that accurately reflects suicidal thoughts and behaviors as well as non-suicidal self-injury, and research on youth in this field is more limited compared to adults. Through neural imaging studies, it has been found that suicidal behaviors and non-suicidal self-injury in adolescents may be associated with neural alterations. Future longitudinal studies will help identify new targets for treating youth with STBs and NSSI.

Self-injury from early adolescence to early adulthood: age-related course, recurrence, and services use in males and females from the community

Annekatrin Steinhoff et al.

Summary: Adolescent self-injury is a prevalent issue in Switzerland, with higher recurrence rates in males after age 15, and females reaching a peak at age 15. Most adolescents with self-injury do not receive mental health services, with notable gender differences - males mainly seek help for externalizing issues, learning difficulties, and attention problems, while females seek help for depression, family problems, and victimization. Early intervention targeting internalizing symptoms could be effective in preventing recurrent self-injury.
