Hygromechanics of softwood cellulosic nanocomposite with intermolecular interactions at fiber-matrix interface investigated with molecular dynamics

Chi Zhang et al.

Summary: Intermolecular interactions at the fiber-matrix interface strongly influence the hygromechanical behavior and overall mechanical performance of hydrophilic cellulosic nanocomposites. The investigation of a model interface inspired by natural wood reveals an anisotropic and non-monotonic swelling behavior of the composite with increasing moisture content. The findings on the interfacial shear strength and the correlation between hydrogen bonds and interfacial shear stress provide insights into the mechanics of fiber-reinforced composites.

Solvent-free cellulose nanocrystal fluids for simultaneous enhancement of mechanical properties, thermal conductivity, moisture permeability and antibacterial properties of polylactic acid fibrous membrane

Hui Shen et al.

Summary: This study successfully designed a multifunctional biodegradable composite fiber with features such as ultrafast water vapor transport and evaporation, robust mechanical properties, rapid heat dissipation, and excellent antibacterial activity. By converting cellulose powder into spherical cellulose crystal fluids (CNCfs) and embedding them into bio-based polylactic acid (PLA) fibrous membrane, the fibrous membrane obtained unique properties during the electrospinning process.

A Plant Leaf-Mimetic Membrane with Controllable Gas Permeation for Efficient Preservation of Perishable Products

Zhiqiang Zhou et al.

Summary: About one-third of the world's food is lost and wasted each year, with perishable products like fruits and vegetables accounting for the largest percentage of food waste due to their short shelf life. This study introduces a biomimetic strategy using PLLA or chitosan porous microspheres in a shellac membrane to regulate gas permeability and selectivity, showing exceptional preservation performance on different fruits and potential for other applications. The materials demonstrate excellent properties such as antioxidant, antimicrobial, water-resistant, and reusability by controlling gas permeability and selectivity, making them promising for food preservation and controlled atmosphere applications.
