Modelling delaminations using adaptive cohesive segments with rotations in dynamic explicit analysis

Jagan Selvaraj et al.

Summary: This study introduces a new method called Adaptive Mesh Segmentation for modeling multiple delamination planes in composite structures under static over-loading or impact loading. By introducing a cohesive formulation with rotational degrees of freedom and a new moment-damage relationship, the resolution of the numerical cohesive zone is increased and model accuracy is considerably improved.

Use of enriched shell elements compared to solid elements for modelling delamination growth during impact on composites

Mark McElroy et al.

Summary: This paper introduces an enhanced shell element for simulating low-velocity impact damage in composite laminates, which is computationally more efficient than high-fidelity models. The enriched element utilizes the Floating Node Method and a damage algorithm based on the Virtual Crack Closure Technique to simulate progressive damage growth. Results from test-analysis correlation for impact testing of laminates are presented, demonstrating the potential accuracy of the shell model for a wide range of engineering applications.
