The differences in viscoelastic properties of subtendons result from the anatomical tripartite structure of human Achilles tendon-ex vivo experimental study and modeling

Martyna Ekiert et al.

Summary: The divisible structure of the Achilles tendon along with diverse material properties of its subtendons are suspected to cause non-homogeneous stress and strain distribution. This study is the first ex vivo investigation on individual subtendons of human Achilles tendon, demonstrating muscle-dependent differences in viscoelastic properties. Different constitutive models were calibrated based on experimental results for further application in modeling human AT subtendons.

Characterisation and modeling of additively-manufactured polymeric hybrid lattice structures for energy absorption

Z. P. Sun et al.

Summary: Lightweight cellular materials and structures are widely used in load-bearing and energy absorption applications due to their favorable mechanical properties. Recent advances in additive manufacturing techniques have allowed for tailored architectural geometries in cellular structures. New hybrid lattice designs combining the advantages of octet and bending-dominated structures show stable post-yield stress plateau without significant sacrifice in stiffness and strength. This study suggests further enhancement of energy absorption performance in lattice structures by appropriately tuning their topological architectures.

Energy absorption properties of macro triclinic lattice structures with twin boundaries inspired by microstructure of feldspar twinning crystals

Yijie Bian et al.

Summary: Inspired by the microstructure of triclinic crystal material, lattice structures with twin boundaries were designed for energy absorption application. Introducing twin boundaries controls deformation mode and improves energy absorption performance, with both TCs and TBCCs showing increased energy absorption with more twin boundaries. The designed structures also follow the Hall-Petch relationship, confirming the feasibility of designing novel lattice structures by mimicking material microstructures.

Additive manufacturing of bio-inspired multi-scale hierarchically strengthened lattice structures

Chaolin Tan et al.

Summary: This study explores a TiNi biomaterial that mimics human bones, with low modulus and asymmetric mechanical behavior. The bio-inspired TiNi functionally graded lattice structure (FGLS) demonstrates higher strength and ductility compared to uniform lattice, while maintaining a low specific modulus. Post-process heat treatments alter the microstructure to create a multi-scale hierarchically strengthened behavior.

Summary: The skeletal system of the predominantly deep-sea sponge Euplectella aspergillum continues to inspire researchers in various fields. Through an integrated finite element and fluid dynamics approach, it was found that the unique maze-like ridge organization surrounding the main skeletal tube not only provides additional mechanical reinforcement, but also effectively suppresses vortex shedding, highlighting its potential benefits in engineering contexts.
