Amphibian species richness and endemism in tropical montane cloud forests across the Neotropics

Cecilia Tobar-Suarez et al.

Summary: The study found that amphibian species richness increases towards the equator in the Neotropics, with distinct patterns in different taxa and their relationship to climate variables. Climate variables explained less than half of the variations in total species richness, indicating that factors such as historical biogeography and orographic heterogeneity may also play crucial roles.

Phylogenomics of the Mesoamerican alligator-lizard genera Abronia and Mesaspis (Anguidae: Gerrhonotinae) reveals multiple independent clades of arboreal and terrestrial species

Jorge Gutierrez-Rodriguez et al.

Summary: Abronia and Mesaspis are two genera of anguid lizards primarily found in Mesoamerica, with arboreal and terrestrial species respectively. Recent molecular studies have shown that while these genera form a monophyletic group, they are not monophyletic individually. Their phylogenetic relationships are best explained by geography rather than current taxonomy. This study demonstrates the utility of ddRADseq data in reconstructing the evolutionary history of vertebrate taxa.

The role of Indigenous and Community Conservation Areas in herpetofauna conservation: a preliminary list for Santa Cruz Tepetotutla, Oaxaca Mexico

Summary: Field surveys were conducted in the montane cloud forests of the Sierra Madre de Oaxaca, revealing a diversity of 40 species of amphibians and reptiles. These surveys identified range extensions for 32.5% of the recorded species and altitudinal range extensions for 20% of the species. Furthermore, the rediscovery of Rhadinella schistosa highlights the importance of studying remote areas for increasing species population knowledge.

Amphibian Speciation Rates Support a General Role of Mountains as Biodiversity Pumps

Adrian Garcia-Rodriguez et al.

Summary: Continental mountain areas, covering less than 15% of global land surface, concentrate over 80% of global terrestrial diversity. Higher diversification rates in regions of high topographic complexity may explain the high mountain diversities. Families with high speciation rates tend to have a high proportion of species distributed in mountains.
