Tailoring the gain and phase of the flame transfer function through targeted convective-acoustic interference

Eirik Aesoy et al.

Summary: This study investigates how targeted interference between two well-characterized sources of hydrodynamic disturbances can modify the response of premixed bluff-body stabilized H-2/CH4 flames with and without swirl. The Flame Transfer Function (FTF) can be modulated at targeted frequencies by placing different shaped bodies upstream of the flame and varying the distance from the dump plane. The flame response shows that modulations in the fluctuating global heat release rate are caused by linear superposition along the flame front, leading to changes in flame surface area and amplitude of the fluctuating global heat release rate.

Stabilization mechanisms of CH4 premixed swirled flame enriched with a non-premixed hydrogen injection

D. Laera et al.

Summary: High-fidelity Large Eddy Simulations (LES) were used to study the impact of hydrogen injection on a lean turbulent CH4/Air premixed flame, with an Analytically Reduced Chemistry (ARC) mechanism and different transport modeling strategies. The results showed large variations in mixture properties and flame structure, highlighting the importance of using complex transport properties in LES involving hydrogen combustion.

Mean field coupling mechanisms explaining the impact of the precessing vortex core on the flame transfer function

Finn Lueckoff et al.

Summary: Experimental results show that with increasing PVC actuation amplitude, the FTF gain decreases significantly while the FTF phase remains unchanged. This reduction in FTF gain is explained by the decrease in Kelvin-Helmholtz instability and the upstream movement of the flames center of mass.

The effect of hydrogen addition on the amplitude and harmonic response of azimuthal instabilities in a pressurized annular combustor

Thomas Indlekofer et al.

Summary: This study introduces an annular combustion chamber operated at intermediate pressures with CH4-H2 blends, leading to various combustion instabilities. Higher hydrogen content can result in high-amplitude instabilities with significant pressure amplitude contributions, including higher order harmonics. The harmonic response is amplitude dependent with a quadratic relationship between harmonic components of pressure amplitudes.
