Gel formation and its relaxation mechanism of shear-induced aqueous suspensions comprised of bentonite and heptaethylene oleyl ether

Yoshifumi Yamagata et al.

Summary: The gelation and relaxation mechanism of a shear-induced bentonite / heptaethylene oleyl ether (abbreviated as C18:1E7) aqueous suspension was investigated based on Rheo-SALS analysis. The relationship between shear time and bentonite/surfactant concentration was described, showing that gel formation and relaxation processes follow different pathways.

Phase mechanics of colloidal gels: osmotic pressure drives non-equilibrium phase separation

Lilian C. Johnson et al.

Summary: Although dense colloidal gels are typically described as a result of phase separation arrest, they continue to coarsen with age, indicating a slow but ongoing phase separation process. Mechanical yield of reversible colloidal gels releases kinetic arrest and can be viewed as non-equilibrium phase separation. Studies show that external perturbations can lead to bond relaxation and rapid reduction of potential energy, consistent with renewed phase separation.
