Biosorption of Pb and Cd onto Polygonum sachalinense

Ryo Taguchi et al.

Summary: Adsorption behaviors of Pb and Cd onto carbonized Polygonum sachalinense (CPS) were investigated. The adsorption model based on monodentate binding of divalent metal ions with carboxylic and phenolic groups explained the adsorption behaviors. The maximum adsorption capacity of CPS for divalent metal ions was determined as 1.22 mmol/g, and Pb showed higher binding affinities than Cd. The kinetics of Pb and Cd adsorption on CPS revealed that the adsorption onto phenolic groups was rate limiting step.

Comparison of microwave-assisted and thermal-heated synthesis of P (HEMA-co-AM)/PVA interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) hydrogels for Pb(II) removal from aqueous solution: Characterization, adsorption and kinetic study

Warunee Tanan et al.

Summary: The IPN-MW hydrogel prepared by microwave-assisted synthesis showed superior physical properties and Pb(II) adsorption capacity compared to the conventionally thermal-heated IPN-TH hydrogel. The microwave-assisted synthesis is a promising and effective method for the synthesis of P(HEMA-co-AM)/PVA IPN hydrogel as an efficient adsorbent for heavy metal ions removal in aqueous solutions.

Removal of toxic heavy metals, phenolic compounds and textile dyes from industrial waste water using phosphonium based ionic liquids

K. K. Thasneema et al.

Summary: This study focused on the development of three phosphonium based room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) for the extraction of toxic textile dyes, heavy metals, and phenolic compounds. The ILs showed potential for removal of pollutants, with adsorption of dyes increasing with contact time and achieving maximum decolorization at acidic pH and pH 7. The ILs also demonstrated efficient extraction of heavy metals and dyes, and phenolic compounds from industrial waste water. The thermal stability and non-toxicity of the ILs were examined, showing promising results for various technological applications.

Investigation of the Hg(II) biosorption from wastewater by using garlic plant and differential pulse voltammetry

Mohammad Ali Kamyabi et al.

Summary: The study investigated the biosorption of mercury ions by garlic bio-adsorbent using batch and continuous upflow fixed-bed column systems. Differential pulse voltammetry was utilized to detect mercury ions, with models such as Langmuir and Thomas used to analyze the data. The garlic bio-adsorbent showed high adsorption capacity and renewability, making it a promising material for mercury removal from contaminated water sources.

Study of soil microorganisms modified wheat straw and biochar for reducing cadmium leaching potential and bioavailability

Haris Muhammad et al.

Summary: This study investigated the dynamic effects and potential mechanisms of wheat-straw, wheat-straw biochar, and biologically modified wheat-straw on the adsorption, leaching behavior, chemical fractions, and bioavailability of cadmium. The research revealed that biologically modified wheat-straw had the highest biosorption capacity for Cd and significantly reduced Cd concentration in leachate compared to wheat-straw biochar and wheat-straw treatments. These findings suggest a novel approach for the development of functional materials and strategies for eco-friendly and sustainable trace metal remediation in contaminated soil and water.

Biosorption of heavy metal ions by green alga Neochloris oleoabundans: Effects of metal ion properties and cell wall structure

Siwei Gu et al.

Summary: The effects of metal ion properties and the cell wall structure of green alga Neochloris oleoabundans on five selected heavy metal ions were investigated. Pb(II) showed the strongest inhibitive effects on the adsorption of other metal ions, followed by Cu(II). The adsorption capacity of N. oleoabundans biomass to the tested two-valence metal ions is proportional to the electronegativity and inversely proportional to the radius of the metal ions.
