Hydroxychloroquine as Pre-exposure Prophylaxis for Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Healthcare Workers: A Randomized Trial

Radha Rajasingham et al.

Summary: A clinical trial investigating hydroxychloroquine prophylaxis for healthcare workers at high risk of exposure to SARS-CoV-2 found that once-weekly or twice-weekly dosing did not significantly reduce the incidence of laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 or COVID-19-compatible illness.

Repurposed Antiviral Drugs for Covid-19-Interim WHO Solidarity Trial Results

Summary: The authors of the study reported the interim results of using four repurposed antiviral drugs (remdesivir, hydroxychloroquine, lopinavir, and interferon beta-1a) in hospitalized COVID-19 patients. The study showed that these drug regimens had little or no effect on overall mortality, initiation of ventilation, and duration of hospital stay.

A Cluster-Randomized Trial of Hydroxychloroquine for Prevention of Covid-19

Oriol Mitja et al.

Summary: In a trial involving asymptomatic contacts of patients with PCR-confirmed Covid-19 in Spain, the authors compared the use of hydroxychloroquine with usual care. Postexposure therapy with hydroxychloroquine did not prevent SARS-CoV-2 infection or symptomatic Covid-19 in healthy persons.

Worldwide Survey of COVID-19-Associated Arrhythmias

Ellie J. Coromilas et al.

Summary: COVID-19 patients with cardiac complications, particularly cardiac arrhythmias, have high morbidity and mortality. The study revealed common cardiac comorbidities among patients with arrhythmias and most had no prior history of arrhythmia. Regional variations were observed in the types of arrhythmias and treatment approaches.

Does hydroxychloroquine still have any role in the COVID-19 pandemic?

William H. K. Schilling et al.

Summary: Chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine, with their long history and widespread use in malaria and rheumatological conditions, became prime candidates for repurposing at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic due to their broad-spectrum antiviral activity. However, clinical trials have shown that these drugs are not beneficial for hospitalized patients with severe COVID-19. The only treatments with proven benefit at this stage of infection are immunomodulators like dexamethasone and IL-6 receptor antagonists, as no antiviral drugs have proven life-saving in late-stage COVID-19.

Positive impact of oral hydroxychloroquine and povidone-iodine throat spray for COVID-19 prophylaxis: An open-label randomized trial

Raymond Chee Seong Seet et al.

Summary: The study found that chemoprophylaxis with either oral hydroxychloroquine or povidone-iodine throat spray was superior to oral vitamin C in reducing SARS-CoV-2 infection in young and healthy men. Participants receiving zinc/vitamin C combination had the highest rate of interruptions due to side effects.

Cardiovascular complications of COVID-19

Farnaz Farshidfar et al.

Summary: The emergence of SARS-CoV-2 has led to a global pandemic with a high impact on public health. Apart from lung involvement, COVID-19 also affects the cardiovascular system, with preexisting cardiovascular disease increasing mortality in patients with the virus. Potential mechanisms for cardiovascular complications include direct viral infection and cytokine storm-induced myocarditis.
