Compositional Flux Within the Intestinal Microbiota and Risk for Bloodstream Infection With Gram-negative Bacteria

Igor Stoma et al.

Summary: This study investigated the connection between gram-negative intestinal colonization and the risk of gram-negative BSIs in allo-HCT recipients. Results showed that domination by gram-negative bacteria in the intestine was associated with subsequent BSI. Fluoroquinolone prophylaxis seemed to reduce these infections by influencing gut colonization. Initial colonization by certain genus members was associated with protection against gram-negative BSI.

NetCoMi: network construction and comparison for microbiome data in R

Stefanie Peschel et al.

Summary: NetCoMi is an R package that provides a comprehensive computational workflow for constructing, analyzing, and comparing microbial association networks from high-throughput sequencing data. It allows for the construction and analysis of single microbial association networks, quantifying network differences, and comparing the heterogeneity of microbiome samples. The tool can also construct differential networks to assess pairwise taxa associations between two groups.

Compilation of longitudinal microbiota data and hospitalome from hematopoietic cell transplantation patients

Chen Liao et al.

Summary: This study presents a comprehensive patient dataset, including fecal microbiota compositions from cancer patients undergoing allo-HCT, to overcome the limitations of human microbiota datasets. By providing a large number of samples and detailed metadata, it can help address clinical and scientific questions related to host-associated microbial communities.

Gut microbiota response to antibiotics is personalized and depends on baseline microbiota

Armin Rashidi et al.

Summary: Our study found that despite heavy and sustained antibiotic pressure, microbial communities within the same patient remained more similar to each other than to those from other patients. We identified 6 taxa within the pre-treatment microbiota that predicted the extent of antibiotic-induced perturbations. Our results suggest that specific species in the pre-treatment microbiota play a key role in determining personalized microbiota responses to antibiotics in humans, which could lead to precision interventions to prevent antibiotic-induced dysbiosis and its adverse clinical consequences.

Altered microbiota-host metabolic cross talk preceding neutropenic fever in patients with acute leukemia

Armin Rashidi et al.

Summary: Changes in gut microbiota affect the risk of neutropenic fever in acute leukemia patients, with Akkermansia playing a crucial role and potentially influencing metabolism through regulating metabolite absorption. Certain characteristics in the serum metabolome of patients are associated with gut Akkermansia and the risk of fever, suggesting oxidative stress as a factor in Akkermansia-mediated diseases.
