Summary: Smoking and genetic predisposition are independent risk factors for colorectal cancer, and considering both factors together can provide powerful risk stratification. Abstaining from smoking can compensate for a substantial proportion of genetically determined CRC risk.

Long-Term Colorectal Cancer Incidence and Mortality After Colonoscopy Screening According to Individuals' Risk Profiles

Kai Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that the absolute benefit of colonoscopy screening is over twice as high for individuals with the highest risk profile compared to those with the lowest risk profile. Based on the risk score, individuals with high and low risk profiles may start screening up to 6-7 years earlier and later, respectively, than the recommended age of 45 years.

Colorectal Cancer Risk by Genetic Variants in Populations With and Without Colonoscopy History

Feng Guo et al.

Summary: This study conducted in Germany compared a polygenic risk score (PRS) based on 140 single nucleotide polymorphisms between CRC patients and control persons with or without a history of colonoscopy. The results indicated that the predictive performance of PRS was underestimated in populations with a history of widespread colonoscopy, highlighting the importance of considering colonoscopy history in developing CRC prediction models using PRS to provide more accurate estimates.
