Black and White Patients With Inflammatory Bowel Disease Show Similar Biologic Use Patterns With Medicaid Insurance

Edward L. Barnes et al.

Summary: A study comparing medication use among Medicaid-insured black and white patients with IBD found no significant disparities in the utilization of IBD-specific therapies. Black patients with CD were more likely to receive combination therapy and immunomodulator monotherapy after surgery compared to white patients. Disparities in IBD treatment seem to be driven by socioeconomic or other issues affecting access to care.

Effects of Race and Ethnicity on Diagnosis and Management of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases

Edward L. Barnes et al.

Summary: The epidemiology of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) in the United States is changing with increasing incidence among non-White races and ethnicities. Understanding the differences in IBD development and progression among patients of different races and ethnicities is crucial to addressing disparities in care and outcomes. Research priorities have been identified to improve health equity among minority patients with IBD.
