Managing folate deficiency implies filling the gap between laboratory and clinical assessment

Simona Ferraro et al.

Summary: The determination of folate status is crucial for preventive intervention health policies, especially in subjects at risk of deficiency. However, there is still poor confidence on the diagnostic accuracy of serum folate assays. This review critically appraises the methodological issues and evidence on folic acid exposure, aiming to optimize folic acid supplementation in individuals at risk of deficiency.

A pseudo-values regression model for non-fatal event free survival in the presence of semi-competing risks

Annalisa Orenti et al.

Summary: The study proposes a semi-competing risks model based on pseudo-values for estimating non-fatal event free survival. By estimating pseudo-values and fitting a GEE model, covariate coefficient estimates are almost unbiased, with the advantage of avoiding convergence issues and enabling a direct smoothed estimate of the hazard function. Simulation study and clinical examples demonstrated the usefulness of the proposed method in handling semi-competing risks settings.

Modelling of hypothetical SARS-CoV-2 point-of-care tests on admission to hospital from A&E: rapid cost-effectiveness analysis

Matt Stevenson et al.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the clinical effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of viral detection point-of-care tests for detecting SARS-CoV-2, showing that point-of-care tests with a desirable target product profile can reduce infections and waiting bay occupancy with high net monetary benefits. Tests with acceptable target product profiles performed less well in terms of cost-effectiveness compared to laboratory-based tests and strategies using currently available SARS-CoV-2 point-of-care tests.

Definition of Outcome-Based Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) Thresholds for Advanced Prostate Cancer Risk Prediction

Simona Ferraro et al.

Summary: This study defined PSA thresholds using a well calibrated risk prediction model to personalize the diagnostic workup for advanced prostate cancer. PSA concentrations can exclude or suggest biopsy referral, but may not provide a valid estimate for cancer risk in patients with glandular inflammation.

High-sensitivity troponin assays for early rule-out of acute myocardial infarction in people with acute chest pain: a systematic review and economic evaluation

Marie Westwood et al.

Summary: The study found that high-sensitivity cardiac troponin testing may be more cost-effective than standard testing, especially for early exclusion of acute myocardial infarction. Strategies with high-sensitivity troponin testing could reduce length of stay and improve efficiency in the diagnosis of acute chest pain patients.
