Preferred intra-seasonal circulation patterns of the Indian summer monsoon and active-break cycles A new view of the active-break cycle

David M. Straus

Summary: Intra-seasonal circulation regimes were identified through cluster analysis of 850 hPa horizontal winds in a specific region. The study showed that the circulation tends to stay in the same cluster between different five-day periods, forming a cycle. Additionally, the research indicated that changes in precipitation in the Indian region are similar to the active-break cycle and the 45-day oscillation.

Upward transport into and within the Asian monsoon anticyclone as inferred from StratoClim trace gas observations

Marc von Hobe et al.

Summary: The Asian summer monsoon anticyclone plays a crucial role in transporting air into the stratosphere from the Asian troposphere, where significant amounts of anthropogenic pollutants are present. However, details regarding the vertical transport timescales, the impact of convection on cross-tropopause exchange, and the specific location and level of transport from the anticyclone to the stratosphere are not completely understood. Recent airborne observations have shown a steady decrease in carbon monoxide and increase in ozone with height, while nitrous oxide remains close to its tropospheric mixing ratio up to a certain level above the local tropopause. The observed changes in carbon monoxide and ozone concentrations likely result from in situ chemical processing, and above a certain altitude, mixing processes become more significant, leading to vertical and horizontal export of air from the anticyclone into the surrounding stratosphere.
