Feasibility and Consistency of Results with Deployment of an In-Line Filter for Exercise-Based Evaluations of Patients With Heart Failure During the Novel Coronavirus Disease-2019 Pandemic

Rohan R. Bhat et al.

Summary: The study examined the feasibility of conducting exercise testing with an in-line filter, and found that oxygen uptake and minute ventilation were highly consistent when using an electrostatic filter with >99.9% viral efficiency. Deployment of a commercially available in-line electrostatic viral filter during cardiopulmonary exercise testing is feasible and provides consistent data.

Randomized Trial of Empagliflozin in Nondiabetic Patients With Heart Failure and Reduced Ejection Fraction

Carlos G. Santos-Gallego et al.

Summary: This study found that empagliflozin significantly improved left ventricular function and volumes, functional capacity, and quality of life in nondiabetic HFrEF patients, compared to placebo. The observations strongly support the role of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors in the treatment of HFrEF patients regardless of their glycemic status.

Summary: The study evaluated RCTs quantifying the impact of HF interventions using actigraphy and found significant heterogeneity in device type, monitoring duration, and data handling among trials. Studies evaluating pharmacologic therapies did not demonstrate significant improvement in actigraphy-based primary end point measurements.

Effect of Empagliflozin on Left Ventricular Volumes in Patients With Type 2 Diabetes, or Prediabetes, and Heart Failure With Reduced Ejection Fraction (SUGAR-DM-HF)

Matthew M. Y. Lee et al.

Summary: The study confirmed the effectiveness of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitor empagliflozin in reducing left ventricular volumes in patients with HFrEF, favoring reverse left ventricular remodeling. This may be one of the mechanisms by which sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors reduce heart failure hospitalization and mortality in HFrEF.
