Sex-related differences in plaque characteristics and endothelial shear stress related plaque-progression in human coronary arteries

Jolanda J. Wentzel et al.

Summary: There are differences in anatomical characteristics and endothelial shear stress (ESS)-related plaque growth between men and women with atherosclerosis. Coronary artery and plaque size are smaller in women compared to men, but ESS and ESS-related plaque progression were similar. However, stratification for age showed that ESS-related plaque growth was more marked in young women compared to men.

Importance of sex and gender in ischaemic stroke and carotid atherosclerotic disease

Karina Gasbarrino et al.

Summary: Stroke is a major cause of death and disability globally, with women experiencing higher mortality and disability rates post-stroke than men. Research and treatment have historically focused on men, leading to underestimation of differences between men and women in stroke symptoms and treatment responses. Women may present with atypical symptoms and require tailored treatment approaches compared to men.

Transcription Factor MAFF (MAF Basic Leucine Zipper Transcription Factor F) Regulates an Atherosclerosis Relevant Network Connecting Inflammation and Cholesterol Metabolism

Moritz von Scheidt et al.

Summary: The study identified the transcription factor MAFF as a central regulator of atherosclerosis/CAD-relevant liver network, playing a key role in the expression of LDLR and other genes affecting CAD risk. This finding reveals the important role of MAFF in inflammation, lipid, and lipoprotein metabolism.

Endothelial Dysfunction in Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Diseases and Beyond: From Mechanism to Pharmacotherapies

Suowen Xu et al.

Summary: The endothelium, a cellular monolayer lining the blood vessel wall, plays a critical role in maintaining multiorgan health and homeostasis. Dysfunction of the vascular endothelium is associated with various diseases and is implicated in severe coronavirus disease 2019. Therapeutic approaches targeting endothelial dysfunction may have potential for treatment of cardiovascular and many other diseases.
