Interfacial Behavior of Giant Amphiphiles Composed of Azobenzene and Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane

Jianwen Liao et al.

Summary: Giant amphiphiles containing azobenzene and polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane units were synthesized and showed photoresponsive behavior under UV irradiation. The phase transition behaviors of these giant amphiphiles on the water surface differed depending on the isomer composition.

In Situ AFM Observation of Folded-Chain Crystallization of a Low-Molecular-Weight Isotactic Poly(methyl methacrylate) in a Langmuir Monolayer at the Molecular Level

Yuki Ono et al.

Summary: Under high humidity conditions, the formation of folded-chain crystals of low-molecular-weight it-PMMA on mica was observed using in situ atomic force microscopy at the molecular level. The crystals grow stepwise with the unit of a single chain, composed of a double-stranded helix. The crystallization process at the molecular level involves deposition, spreading, and growth of an amorphous single chain as new stems on the crystal growth plane.

Morphological Variation of an LB Film of Giant Amphiphiles Composed of Poly(ethylene oxide) and Hydrophobically Modified POSS

Xian Xu et al.

Summary: Hydrophobically modified polyhedral oligomeric silsesquiox-anes (XPOSS) are linked to water-soluble poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) to synthesize giant amphiphiles (XPOSS-PEO), which exhibit interesting surface activation capacity. The LB film deposition protocol is used to transfer monolayers of XPOSS-PEO onto silicon substrates at different surface pressures, significantly affecting the LB film morphologies. LB films assembled with POSS modified with fluorinated agents exhibit a fractal growth pattern, while LB films with POSS decorated with pure alkane chains do not show this pattern.

Phase Behaviors of Giant Surfactants with Different Numbers of Fluorinated Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane Heads and One Poly(ethylene oxide) Tail at the Air-Water Interface

Xian Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the phase behaviors of giant surfactants with different numbers of aryltrifluorovinyl ether-functionalized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (FVPOSS) heads at the air-water interface. The interfacial behaviors greatly change with an increase in the number of FVPOSS heads, showing more phase transitions and morphological evolution. Molecular mechanisms are proposed to explain the phase transitions at the interface.

Discrete Giant Polymeric Chains Based on Nanosized Monomers

Zhongguo Liu et al.

Summary: Polymeric chains constructed by polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) allow precise control of molecular parameters, with studies showing that monomer size has a profound impact on phase stability. This highlights the potential for modular and programmable design of interesting materials.
