Revival of Huckel Aromatic (Poly)benzenoid Subunits in Triplet State Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons by Silicon Substitution

Marija Baranac-Stojanovic et al.

Summary: By employing density functional theory calculations, this study investigates the effect of silicon substitution on the aromaticity of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The results show that the placement of silicon atoms can tune the singlet-triplet energy gaps and regulate the extent of global, semiglobal, and local aromaticity. This work extends the importance of Huckel aromaticity to excited triplet states.

Guidelines for Tuning the Excited State Huckel-Baird Hybrid Aromatic Character of Pro-Aromatic Quinoidal Compounds**

Silvia Escayola et al.

Summary: Pro-aromatic molecules have distinct diradicaloid and T-1 states with potential Baird aromaticity, which can be designed using strategies involving electron-donating substituents on small conjugated rings, electron withdrawing substituents on small exocyclic groups, or electron-deficient conjugated rings with exocyclic electron-donor substitution.

Excited state character of Cibalackrot-type compounds interpreted in terms of Huckel-aromaticity: a rationale for singlet fission chromophore design†

Weixuan Zeng et al.

Summary: This study presents a revised theoretical analysis to design new organic chromophores based on Huckel aromaticity, showing the potential of manipulating excited state energy levels by adjusting substituents. Improved understanding of aromatic characters allows for a feasible design strategy to vary excited state energy levels by tuning the number and nature of Huckel-aromatic units. The complications and pitfalls of excited state aromaticity and antiaromaticity concepts are highlighted, emphasizing the need to link quantitative results with qualitative theoretical analysis.
