Treatment of microcystin (MC-LR) and nutrients in eutrophic water by constructed wetlands: Performance and microbial community

Rui Cheng et al.

Summary: The presence of plants can generally enhance nutrients and microcystins (MCs) removal efficiency in constructed wetlands (CWs), with ceramisite and iron-carbon being more suitable substrates for nutrient and MC-LR removal. The study provides a theoretical basis for practical application of CWs in eutrophication and MCs pollution control.

Remediation of algal cells, PO43-, and NO3- from eutrophic wastewater using Echinodorus cordifolius in zigzag-horizontal subsurface constructed wetlands

Danuphon Boonbangkeng et al.

Summary: The study found that the zigzag-horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetland using Echinodorus cordifolius plants could efficiently remove algal cells, PO43-, and NO3- within 5 days. This was achieved through the interception mechanism of gravel and zigzag baffles, as well as the enhanced dissolved oxygen levels and increased interaction time between wastewater and the CW matrix created by the installation of zigzag baffles and effluent recirculation.

High prevalence of unstable antibiotic heteroresistance in cyanobacteria causes resistance underestimation

Zhiyuan Wang et al.

Summary: Both cyanobacterial bloom and antibiotic resistance have become global threats to public health. Research on cyanobacterial strains isolated from eutrophicated lakes in China revealed high prevalence of antibiotic heteroresistance, with over 90% of isolates exhibiting resistance to multiple antibiotics. This study highlighted the underestimation of cyanobacteria-derived antibiotic resistance due to potential misclassification of susceptibility.
