Interaction of biochar stability and abiotic aging: Influences of pyrolysis reaction medium and temperature

Hye-Bin Kim et al.

Summary: The study found that artificial aging decreased the stability of biochar, resulting in increased release of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and mobility of arsenic. Wet-dry aging had the most significant impact on the release of DOM and arsenic. Using CO2 as a reaction medium can improve the stability of biochar.

Land application of sewage sludge biochar: Assessments of soil-plant-human health risks from potentially toxic metals

Jin Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that the use of biochar can increase radish yield and reduce metal accumulation in plants, with minimal impact on human health risks, but the application should be controlled below 15 t ha(-1). In addition, excessive application of sewage sludge can lead to Cd levels in the soil exceeding food standards.

Magnetic sludge byproducts for adsorptive phosphorus removal: Resource recovery from iron-based anaerobic sewage sludge

Musfique Ahmed et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the feasibility of resource recovery from iron-based sewage sludge by calcining them at different temperatures to transform them into magnetic particles. The research showed that higher calcination temperatures resulted in increased magnetization values and crystallinity of the sludge byproducts. Additionally, the phosphate adsorption capacity of the samples was also evaluated and the sample treated at 350 degrees Celsius showed relatively higher capacity, possibly due to smaller crystallite size and reduced crystallinity.

Biochar and hydrochar derived from freshwater sludge: Characterization and possible applications

Yunhui Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the production and characteristics of hydrochar and biochar, finding that biochar is more suitable for carbon sequestration, while hydrochar contains more labile carbon structures. The results also show that the surface hydrophobicity of hydrochar, biochar, and IS decreases, and they have a positive effect on germination of wheat seeds.
