Active MnO2/biochar composite for efficient As(III) removal: Insight into the mechanisms of redox transformation and adsorption

Dinh Viet Cuong et al.

Summary: An active MnO2/rice husk biochar composite (MBC) with improved porous structure was prepared for enhanced removal of As(III) in groundwater. MBC exhibited a high removal capacity for As(III) and a powerful transformation capability of As(III), with pH influencing its removal efficiency. MnO2 and the BC substrate played important roles in the effective removal of arsenic by MBC.

Application of layered double hydroxide-biochar composites in wastewater treatment: Recent trends, modification strategies, and outlook

Qianzhen Fang et al.

Summary: Layered double hydroxide-biochar (LDH-BC) composites have gained increasing attention as adsorbents and catalysts for contaminant removal due to their good chemical stability, abundant surface functional groups, excellent anion exchange ability, and good electronic properties. Strategies for enhancing the properties of LDH-BC composites, such as magnetic treatment, acid treatment, and LDHs intercalation, are highlighted in this review, with further studies and potential future applications being recommended.

Characteristics and Risk Assessment of 16 Metals in Street Dust Collected from a Highway in a Densely Populated Metropolitan Area of Vietnam

Van-Truc Nguyen et al.

Summary: The study investigated the contamination and risk assessment of 16 metals in street dust from Ha Noi highway, Ho Chi Minh City, revealing moderate contamination levels for certain metals like Pb, Cd, Cu, Sn, Mo, and Zn. The enrichment factor values showed moderate levels for some metals and moderate-severe levels for Zn. The potential ecological risk was high with Zn and Mn contributing significantly to the risk. These findings aim to provide useful information for decision-makers on environmental quality control strategies.

Hierarchical porous biochar from plant-based biomass through selectively removing lignin carbon from biochar for enhanced removal of toluene

Fengli Gan et al.

Summary: This study proposed a simple and green air oxidation method to prepare hierarchical porous biochar by selectively removing lignin carbon from plant-based biomass after pyrolysis. The results showed that air oxidation treatment effectively improved the pore structure of biochar and greatly enhanced the toluene adsorption capacity.

A critical review on biochar-based engineered hierarchical porous carbon for capacitive charge storage

Dinh Viet Cuong et al.

Summary: Hierarchical porous carbon (HPC) has been traditionally fabricated by activated carbon, but biochar is now being explored as a renewable and more environmentally friendly alternative. Recent studies have shown that biochar-based HPC exhibits great potential in capacitive energy storage due to its unique properties. Research efforts have focused on developing biochar-based engineered hierarchical porous carbons (EHPCs) to enhance capacitive charge storage performance through techniques such as templating and doping. The review provides an overview of the applications of biochar-based HPC and EHPC in capacitive charge storage, such as capacitive deionization (CDI) and supercapacitors (SC), and offers future research directions in this field.

Advancements in the use of filtration materials for the removal of metals from multicontaminated solutions

Paolo S. Calabro et al.

Summary: Granular materials are used in various technologies for treating contaminated solutions like groundwater or wastewater, and a recent trend involves using reactive materials from agricultural and industrial waste. Long-term column tests are recommended to accurately simulate the filtration process, as the main challenge is understanding the long-term behavior of these new active materials.
