Assessment of Rainwater Retention Efficiency in Urban Drainage Systems-Model Studies

Kamil Pochwat

Summary: There is a growing interest worldwide in the use of rainwater retention, particularly channel retention, as part of urban drainage systems. This approach involves damming rainwater in existing sewer collectors to maximize gravitational spaces in the channels. The study shows that standard single-chamber reservoirs are the least efficient solution, and that the necessary retention capacity of a single-chamber reservoir can be many times greater compared to highly efficient solutions. The article also proposes retention efficiency indices for future assessment of rainwater storage solutions and provides practical guidelines for designers and potential investors.

Hugo Olvera-Vargas et al.

Summary: This study investigated the synergy between %OH and BDD(center dot OH) in the EF-BDD process for the treatment of pharmaceutical wastewater, achieving a high mineralization yield of 97.1%. While EF-DSA effectively increased the biodegradability of the effluent, EF-BDD showed superior performance in quasi-complete mineralization, despite higher operational costs.

Bisphenol A degradation using waste antivirus copper film with enhanced sono-Fenton-like catalytic oxidation

Jae-Hun Chu et al.

Summary: This study found that waste antivirus copper film can be used as a Fenton-like catalyst, and the reaction activity when combined with H2O2 was significantly enhanced by ultrasound irradiation. The degradation of BPA in the sono-Fenton-like process was affected by various factors such as solution pH, temperature, ultrasound power, CF size, H2O2 dose, and initial BPA concentration.

Summary: This study proposed an integrated valorisation system for fast and effective micropollutant remediation of a complex pharmaceutical mixture by combining adsorption and electro-Fenton processes. The natural iron content in biochar was found to be sufficient to catalyse the electro-Fenton regeneration, allowing for efficient recycling of the adsorption-electro-Fenton process.

Assessment of degradation characteristic and mineralization efficiency of norfloxacin by ionizing radiation combined with Fenton-like oxidation

Xiaoying Chen et al.

Summary: The study found that ionizing radiation combined with Fenton-like oxidation can effectively enhance the degradation and mineralization of norfloxacin. The removal efficiency of norfloxacin is significantly influenced by pH and inorganic anions. In the presence of peptone, glucose, and humic acid, the degradation efficiency of norfloxacin decreases significantly.

Advanced oxidation of landfill leachate: Removal of micropollutants and identification of by-products

Havva Ates et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of Fenton and ozone oxidation on the removal of 16 emerging micropollutants in landfill leachate. It was found that both oxidation processes had high degradation potential for micropollutants, except for PAHs. Fenton oxidation showed higher removal efficiencies of COD and certain micropollutants compared to ozonation, but produced higher molecular weight degradation products.

Highly efficient metal-free electro-Fenton degradation of organic contaminants on a bifunctional catalyst

Xin Qin et al.

Summary: In this study, a metal-free e-Fenton system using O-doped carbon nanotubes (OCNTs) as the bifunctional metal-free cathode was designed for the degradation of organic pollutants. The system demonstrated excellent performance under neutral conditions, with a phenol degradation kinetic constant of 0.071 min-1 and a TOC removal rate of 76.6% within 300 min. This in-situ metal-free e-Fenton system shows promise as a strategy for actual wastewater treatment, with a specific energy consumption lower than reported heterogeneous electro-Fenton systems.

Summary: This study analyzed four categories of organic micropollutants in 10 study sites on the Yangtze River and found that micropollutant mixtures in the surface water exhibited relative high risks for aquatic organisms. PCBs dominated main mixture risks in the upper stream, PAHs contributed major comprehensive risks in the middle stream, and OCPs were the key micropollutants in the downstream.
