Efficacy of chemical factors on production and extraction of biodiesel by microalgae

V. Ananthi et al.

Summary: The search for alternative fuels like biodiesel is driven by environmental factors and cost effectiveness, with microalgae growth and lipid production being influenced by nutrient factors and deprivation of vital chemicals. Various pretreatment methods are utilized to enhance oil extraction from microalgae, with chemical methods being advantageous in terms of energy and time consumption. Combinatorial approaches like thermochemical and microwave-assisted extraction methods are successful in feasible energy production within limited time. Genetic engineered microbes have been developed to withstand suitable pretreatment methods in the production of microalgal biodiesel.

Evaluation of microalgal strains and microalgal consortium for higher lipid productivity and rich fatty acid profile towards sustainable biodiesel production

Chithirai Arutselvan et al.

Summary: The study screened four microalgal strains and a consortium for biodiesel application, with Coelastrella sp. showing higher optical density and Chlorella vulgaris and Scenedesmus dimorphus consortium yielding higher dry cell weight. In outdoor pond raceway pond, different strains showed varying biomass yield and lipid content, indicating potential for biodiesel production.

Relative abundance of lipid types among Chlorella sp. and Scenedesmus sp. and ameliorating homogeneous acid catalytic conditions using central composite design (CCD) for maximizing fatty acid methyl ester yield

Thangavel Mathimani et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the biodiesel potential of two hyper lipid producing strains Chlorella sp. and Scenedesmus sp. in terms of biomass yield, lipid content, and fatty acid composition. Scenedesmus sp. showed higher levels of saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids, making it a promising candidate for biodiesel production.

Biodegradation of Used Motor Oil and Biofuel Production by Microalgae Coelastrella sp. M60 and Scenedesmus sp. VJ1

Elamathi Vimali et al.

Summary: Microalgae, such as Coelastrella sp. M60 and Scenedesmus sp. VJ1, were used for the bioremediation of pollutants and production of biodiesel from used motor oil, with the highest lipid content observed in microalgae grown in 5% UMO. TiO2 was selected as a catalyst for examining the fatty acid methyl ester profile, and the biodegradation of UMO by the microalgae was evaluated using GC-MS analysis.

Unveiling the induced lipid production in Chlorella vulgaris under pulsed magnetic field treatment

Edachery Baldev et al.

Summary: Utilizing a 700 mG pulsed magnetic field for 4 hours per day at 1Hz was found to be the optimum condition for enhancing biomass and lipid content in Chlorella vulgaris, resulting in a doubling of dry cell weight and a lipid content of 55.2%. FTIR analysis indicated that the pulsed magnetic field treatment increased active oxygen, leading to enhanced growth and lipid production in C. vulgaris.

Enhancement of lipid production in Desmodesmus intermedius Z8 by ultrasonic stimulation coupled with nitrogen and phosphorus stress

Zhi Li et al.

Summary: This study developed an approach using UCNP to enhance biomass concentration and lipid production in Desmodesmus intermedius Z(8), finding that intracellular antioxidant enzymes and antioxidants play a key role in response to oxidative stress. Under UCNP conditions, lipid fractions and saturated fatty acids ratios were increased, making them more in line with biodiesel material standard.

Malith Premaratne et al.

Summary: The study found that Desmodesmus sp. can efficiently sequester CO2 in nitrogen-limited media and produce biomass rich in carbohydrates. While the increase in lipid content was not as significant under nitrogen limitation, the biodiesel properties of microalgal lipids met the ASTM D6751-12 standard.
