Investigation of PAH and soot formation in a dimethyl ether (DME) laminar coflow diffusion flame

Tianjiao Li et al.

Summary: The study investigated PAH and soot formation in pure DME flames, revealing that gas phase reactions are dominated by PAHs smaller than three rings before soot particles appear, and primary particle diameters remain relatively constant. Numerical predictions were consistent with measurements, while the model overpredicted the mole fraction of A3. Additionally, the experimental results suggested that PAHs are mainly formed by HACA, with C-1 addition being efficient for monoaromatic PAHs.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in airborne particulate matter samples from Hanoi, Vietnam: Particle size distribution, aryl hydrocarbon ligand receptor activity, and implication for cancer risk assessment

Nguyen Thanh Trung et al.

Summary: The study found that airborne particulate matter collected from high-traffic roads in the urban area of Hanoi contained significant levels of both PAHs and Me-PAHs, with higher molecular weight PAHs increasing in concentration as particle size decreased. The BaP-EQs derived from the PAH-CALUX assays were highly correlated with the concentrations of PAHs and Me-PAHs, indicating interaction effects between the compounds. By using the PAH-CALUX BaP-EQs, the cancer risk values (ILCR values) ranged from 1.0 x 10(-4) to 2.8 x 10(-4) for adults and from 6.4 x 10(-5) to 1.8 x 10(-4) for children.

Reaction between the i-C4H5 radical and propargyl radical (C3H3): A theoretical study

Endong Wang et al.

Summary: In certain fuel flames, i-C4H5 radical and C3H3 radical can coexist in appreciable concentrations, but the detailed reaction mechanism leading to aromatic rings is still not fully explored. This study carefully constructed a reaction network at the CBS-QB3 level of theory, proposing multiple possible reaction paths including cyclization, ring expanse, and isomerization reactions that lead to the formation of aromatic rings such as toluene. This work should be valuable for further studies in constructing kinetic mechanisms in the field of combustion.

Forest fires as drivers of contamination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons to the terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems

Isabel Campos et al.

Summary: Forest fires are a significant source of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, which play a crucial role in the formation and redistribution of PAHs across terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. The introduction of PAHs into the environment due to wildfires raises environmental concerns due to their toxicity, persistence, and bioaccumulation potential. Postfire PAH fluxes can vary based on factors such as vegetation composition, fire severity, and postfire hydrological conditions, with off-site effects being particularly notable during the initial postfire period. This review emphasizes the importance of considering forest fires as a diffuse source of PAH contamination to both terrestrial and aquatic systems in future monitoring and management programs.

Gas-phase synthesis of benzene via the propargyl radical self-reaction

Long Zhao et al.

Summary: The study provides compelling evidence that the self-recombination of two resonantly stabilized propargyl radicals in dilute environments can form the very first ringed aromatic benzene of PAHs. Along with benzene, other structural isomers and o-benzyne were detected and their branching ratios were experimentally quantified and verified with computational simulations. These results help uncover molecular growth pathways in various environments and improve our understanding of hydrocarbon chemistry in the universe.
