All-Organic Redox Targeting with a Single Redox Moiety: Combining Organic Radical Batteries and Organic Redox Flow Batteries

Erik Schroeter et al.

Summary: This study investigates an all-organic Nernstian potential-driven redox targeting system that combines a single-electrode material from organic radical batteries with a single redox couple of an aqueous, organic redox flow battery. The experimental results demonstrate that 78-90% of the theoretical capacity of the electrode material from the organic radical battery can be addressed when it is used as the redox target in the electrolyte tank of an operating aqueous organic redox flow battery.

All-Organic Storage Solids and Redox Shuttles for Redox-Targeting Flow Batteries

Curt M. Wong et al.

Summary: This study details the design of all-organic materials and shuttles for high-capacity storage systems using redox chemistries, including tailored heterogeneous polymers and a redox-targeting flow battery. By tuning the steric and electronic properties of organic shuttles and solids, high levels of capacity and voltage efficiency have been achieved, which helps to advance the large-scale integration of renewable energies into the electrical grid.

Comparison of Separators vs Membranes in Nonaqueous Redox Flow Battery Electrolytes Containing Small Molecule Active Materials

Zhiming Liang et al.

Summary: The lack of suitable membranes for nonaqueous electrolytes limits cell capacity and cycle lifetime in organic redox flow cells. The study revealed a trade-off between lifetime and Coulombic efficiency, with nonselective separators achieving more stable performance but suffering from low Coulombic efficiencies, while ion-selective membranes achieving high Coulombic efficiencies but experiencing capacity loss over time. Additionally, when electrolytes are premixed prior to cycling, high Coulombic efficiency can be maintained but capacity is lost due to cell imbalance, which can be recovered by electrolyte rebalancing.
