Diffusiophoretic velocity of a spherical soft particle

Hiroyuki Ohshima

Summary: This paper investigates the diffusiophoretic velocity of a spherical soft particle in an electrolyte concentration gradient and derives a general expression for it. For weakly charged soft particles, the obtained expression is shown to be consistent with previous research results. In addition, a simple approximate analytic expression is obtained for the case where the particle core radius and the thickness of the polyelectrolyte layer are much larger than the Debye length and the Brinkman screening length.

Combined Effects of Zeta-potential and Temperature of Nanopores on Diffusioosmotic Ion Transport

Jongwan Lee et al.

Summary: This study utilized a self-assembled particle membrane-integrated microfluidic platform to successfully modulate the material properties of nanopores and quantify the effect of zeta-potential on diffusioosmosis. The experimental results demonstrated a nonlinear relationship between DO-driven ion transport and the ionic strength of the electrolytes, with the latter governing the effectiveness of ion transport in diffusioosmosis or diffusion phenomena.

A diffusiophoretic mechanism for ATP-driven transport without motor proteins

Beatrice Ramm et al.

Summary: This study reveals a hidden function of the Escherichia coli MinDE protein system in actively transporting functionally unrelated cargo on membranes through a diffusiophoretic mechanism. This mechanism enables the sorting of diffusive objects based on their effective size. The coupling between diffusive fluxes of MinDE and non-specific cargo via density-dependent friction represents a novel physical mechanism for establishing intracellular organization.

Diffusiophoresis and diffusioosmosis in tandem: Two-dimensional particle motion in the presence of multiple electrolytes

Benjamin M. Alessio et al.

Summary: Research findings suggest that diffusiophoretic compaction can be increased or decreased by manipulating electrolyte combinations, total solute concentration, wall charge, and particle diffusivity. Each effect can modify particle velocity in unison or in opposition to the other effects in different ways.

Droplet migration into dead-end channels at high salinity enhanced by micelle gradients of a zwitterionic surfactant

Nan Shi et al.

Summary: High-salinity solutions were found to have negligible enhancement on the migration of oil droplets under electrolyte gradients, while non-electrolyte gradients and micelle gradients were effective alternatives. The repulsive interaction between micelles and droplets at high salinity conditions played a significant role in enhancing droplet migration. The synergistic effect of simultaneous electrolyte and micelle gradients further promoted droplet migration.

A two-step strategy for delivering particles to targets hidden within microfabricated porous media

Huanshu Tan et al.

Summary: The study proposes a two-step strategy to deliver suspended colloids to hidden targets in closed porous media by converting hidden targets into soluto-inertial beacons and introducing deliverable objects designed to autonomously migrate against solute fluxes emitted by the targets. Experimental and theoretical demonstrations show the design elements required for delivering colloidal objects to hidden targets in various environments and technologies.

CO2-Driven diffusiophoresis and water cleaning: similarity solutions for predicting the exclusion zone in a channel flow

Suin Shim et al.

Summary: This study experimentally and theoretically examines the diffusion-phoretic separation of negatively charged particles in a rectangular channel flow driven by CO2 dissolution. By applying a shear flow approximation and defining a similarity variable, the research provides design parameters for in-flow water cleaning systems based on the observed flow behaviors and theoretical models.

CO2-Driven diffusiophoresis for maintaining a bacteria-free surface

Summary: The study investigates the diffusiophoretic motion induced by the dissolution and dissociation of CO2 in an aqueous phase, identifying characteristic length and time scales and demonstrating directional migration of bacteria in response to CO2 concentration gradient. The findings suggest potential applications for bacterial diffusiophoresis in cleaning systems or anti-biofouling surfaces by reducing cell populations near CO2 sources.
