Fine tuning of charge motion over homogeneous transient metal chalcogenides heterostructured photoanodes for photoelectrochemical water splitting

Qiao-Ling Mo et al.

Summary: Metal oxides-based photoelectrochemical cells have attracted enduring interest as a sustainable and environmentally friendly technique for solar energy conversion. However, the efficiency of these photoelectrodes is limited by sluggish charge transport dynamics, tough vectorial controllable charge migration route, and confined light absorption. In this study, we demonstrate a tunable construction of homogeneous transition metal chalcogenides heterostructured photoanodes using a simple cation exchange strategy. The resulting composite photoanodes show significantly enhanced performance for PEC water splitting under visible and simulated solar light irradiation, mainly due to improved interfacial charge transfer/separation. This ion exchange approach can be applied to other transition metal chalcogenides-based hybrid photoanodes, providing a new avenue for solar energy conversion.

Constructing NiFe-metal-organic frameworks from NiFe-layered double hydroxide as a highly efficient cocatalyst for BiVO4 photoanode PEC water splitting

Yan Li et al.

Summary: In this study, a NiFe-metal-organic frameworks (NiFe-MOFs) cocatalyst was prepared and integrated with BiVO4 to construct a composite photoanode, leading to significant improvements in photocurrent density and stability. The NiFe-MOFs enhanced the incident photon-current conversion efficiency (IPCE) and improved the injection and separation efficiency of charge carriers, thus promoting the kinetics of water oxidation.

A bridging coordination of urea tailoring metal hydroxides oxygen evolution catalysts promotes stable solar water splitting

Mao Sun et al.

Summary: In this work, urea was introduced into Ni,Fe-based hydroxides to form robust and conformal OECs layers, enhancing the stability and PEC performance of BiVO4 photoanodes. The optimized urea-NiFeOOH/BiVO4 photoanode exhibited high stability and good electrocatalytic performance, demonstrating the potential of using non-precious metal based electrocatalysts for long-term stability in PEC water splitting.

Interface engineering Z-scheme Ti-Fe2O3/In2O3 photoanode for highly efficient photoelectrochemical water splitting

Yinyin Li et al.

Summary: Exploiting interface-engineering of In2O3-based photoanode to achieve higher charge separation efficiency is crucial in water splitting research. The Ti-Fe2O3/In2O3 photoanodes with optimized Ti4+ doping concentration showed excellent PEC performance, achieving the highest photocurrent density and confirming the Z-scheme transfer mechanism through femtosecond time-resolved absorption spectroscopy and in-situ double-beam detection strategy. This work provides an effective strategy for designing and regulating high-efficiency composite photoanodes.

Layer Orientation-Engineered Two-Dimensional Platinum Ditelluride for High-Performance Direct Alcohol Fuel Cells

Jinfa Chang et al.

Summary: The new Pt-based catalyst M-PtTe2, composed of vertically- and horizontally aligned 2D PtTe2 layers, shows significantly improved ORR performance and extremely low alcohol adsorption energies, making it highly suitable for alcohol tolerant DLFCs. This new understanding of the role of 2D layer orientation in ORR kinetics and thermodynamics suggests useful catalyst design principles.
