Visualizing Degradation of Cellulose Nanofibers by Acid Hydrolysis

Panagiotis Spiliopoulos et al.

Summary: The process of cellulose hydrolysis involves an intermediate semi-fibrous stage before forming objects resembling cellulose nanocrystals in a solid/gas system. The length of these nanocrystal-like objects is well correlated with molar mass and X-ray diffraction shows a slight increase in crystallinity index as hydrolysis proceeds. This research provides a modern visual complement to over a century of cellulose degradation studies.

Ultrafast-charging quasi-solid-state fiber-shaped zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitors with superior flexibility

Jie Pu et al.

Summary: To improve the capacitance and rate performance, a 3D nitrogen-doped carbon nanotube architecture@carbon nanotube (N-CNT@CNT) fiber electrode was designed, utilizing the fast electron transport kinetics of the N-CNT active material and the high specific surface area of the 3D N-CNT network. A quasi-solid-state FZHSC assembled by twisting the N-CNT@CNT fiber and Zn NSs@CNT fiber demonstrated superior electrochemical performance at rates up to 5 V s(-1), achieving the highest reported charging/discharging rate for FZHSCs based on carbon materials, with a high areal energy density of 5.18 mu W h cm(-2).
