Effects of nitrogen addition on anaerobic oxidation of methane in Zoige Plateau peatlands

Junxia Liu et al.

Summary: The study found that nitrogen addition did not increase the potential of AOM in Zoige peatlands, but instead had an inhibitory effect on it; Different soil layers had different responses to the two forms of nitrogen, reflecting variable needs for different forms of nitrogen in different soil layers; Soil water content, dissolved organic carbon, iron content, and pH played important roles in the potential of AOM in the Zoige peatlands.

Mini-metagenome analysis of psychrophilic electroactive biofilms based on single cell sorting

Yang Yang et al.

Summary: Understanding the metabolic function of psychrophilic electroactive bacteria is crucial for studying extracellular electron transfer mechanisms under low temperatures. Through Raman activated cell ejection coupled high throughput sequencing, it was found that psychrophilic bacteria in biofilm communities have a high abundance of membrane transport functional genes ftsEX, indicating adaptation to low temperatures and maintenance of the electron pool for EET process. The identification of iron (Ill) transport system genes in high abundance suggests active metabolic reaction for potential electron transfer process mediated by c-type cytochromes.

Reutilize tire in microbial fuel cell for enhancing the nitrogen removal of the anammox process coupled with iron-carbon micro-electrolysis

Fei Xie et al.

Summary: Microbial fuel cells were used to enhance the nitrogen removal performance of combined anaerobic ammonium oxidation and Fe-C micro-electrolysis systems. The system's effective operation time increased to over 50 days, significantly improving total nitrogen removal efficiency. Enhanced performance was attributed to electron transfer and proton exchange membrane-induced pH decrease, promoting denitrification and aiding in reducing nitrate/nitrite.

Simultaneous nitrate and sulfate dependent anaerobic oxidation of methane linking carbon, nitrogen and sulfur cycles

Wen-Bo Nie et al.

Summary: ANME archaea can mediate simultaneous sulfate- and nitrate-dependent anaerobic oxidation of methane, forming a crucial link between the carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur cycles in natural environments. They collaborate with sulfate-reducing bacteria to convert sulfate to sulfide and then sulfide-oxidizing autotrophic denitrifiers to oxidize sulfide back to sulfate, thereby alleviating sulfide accumulation. The unique nanonets formed by ANME-2d and SRB likely facilitate electron transfer, highlighting the complex interactions in methane oxidation processes.

Simultaneous removal of nitrite and organics in a biofilm-enhanced high-salt wastewater treatment system via mixotrophic denitrification coupled with sulfate reduction

Wei Li et al.

Summary: The integration of sulfate reduction, heterotrophic denitrification and autotrophic denitrification in a biofilm-enhanced high-salt wastewater treatment system was studied, with sulfate reduction acting as an intermediate reaction. The metabolic pathways of carbon, nitrogen and sulfur were discussed based on functional genes analysis, along with the study of reactor performances and spatial distribution of bacterial communities. The removal efficiencies of nitrite and organics reached 100% due to the stable and functional bacterial community, with specific dominant functional bacteria in the biofilm.

Summary: This study proposed an effective method to reduce methane emissions from constructed wetlands by introducing Mn-dependent anaerobic oxidation of methane (Mn-AOM) and microbial fuel cell (MFC) technology. The results showed that combining biological methods and bioelectrochemical methods can more effectively control methane emissions from constructed wetlands. Using Mn ore as the matrix and operating MFC effectively reduced methane emissions from constructed wetlands, with higher COD removal rate obtained in CW-MFC (Mn) during the 200 days of operation.
