Potential Dependence of the Local pH in a CO2 Reduction Electrolyzer

Danielle A. Henckel et al.

Summary: The study found that the local pH of a gas diffusion electrode undergoing CO2 reduction is significantly lower than the bulk electrolyte pH, showing dependence on applied potential. The decrease in pH is attributed to the formation of malachite from soluble Cu(II) species on the initially oxidized electrode surface.

Designing anion exchange membranes for CO2 electrolysers

Danielle A. Salvatore et al.

Summary: New technologies are needed to efficiently convert carbon dioxide into fuels and chemicals at near-ambient temperatures and pressures. Anion exchange membranes in zero-gap reactors show promise for mediating the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction, but challenges remain in tailoring these membranes to meet the requirements of CO2RR systems.

The in situ growth of Cu2O with a honeycomb structure on a roughed graphite paper for the efficient electroreduction of CO2 to C2H4

Zuoyu Yan et al.

Summary: Metals and their alloy-based electrocatalysts are still highly sought after for electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reactions. In this study, cuprous oxide was supported on N-doped flexible roughed graphite paper to fabricate self-supporting electrocatalysts for CO2RRs. The Cu2O/NGP electrocatalyst showed high Faradaic efficiency of 96% and 35% ethylene selectivity, with excellent stability over 10 hours, attributed to its unique self-supporting structure and the synergistic effect between Cu2O and NGP.

Catholyte-free electroreduction of CO2 for sustainable production of CO: concept, process development, techno-economic analysis, and CO2 reduction assessment

Jaeseo Lee et al.

Summary: The study focuses on examining CO production performance using CF-ECO2R, which shows higher energy conversion efficiency and lower cell voltage compared to traditional methods. The developed mathematical model and techno-economic analyses suggest that the technology is feasible, economically competitive, and has the potential to reduce CO2 emissions significantly. Operating voltage of CF-ECO2R and regional factors strongly impact the cost and CO2 emissions of the system.
