Metal ion recovery from electrodialysis-concentrated plating wastewater via pilot-scale sequential electrowinning/chemical precipitation

Joohyun Kim et al.

Summary: In this study, a pilot-scale electrodialysis system was developed for the treatment of plating wastewater, concentrating metal species for selective recovery via electrowinning and chemical precipitation processes. Electrodialysis showed potential for addressing challenges in metal recovery from low concentration wastewater, demonstrating selective recovery of copper and other metals.

Characterization of graphene/pine wood biochar hybrids: Potential to remove aqueous Cu2+

Hasara Samaraweera et al.

Summary: Biochar-based hybrid composites with added nano-sized phases are effective adsorbents for pollutant removal, especially when functionalized with nanomaterials. Different pine wood wastes blended with varying graphenes were pyrolyzed to create adsorbents with different Cu2+ adsorption capacities, with GPBC-1 showing the highest capacity. The results suggest that the surface properties of the biochar composites play a crucial role in enhancing Cu2+ removal.

Stabilization of dissolvable biochar by soil minerals: Release reduction and organo-mineral complexes formation

Fan Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of soil minerals on the release of dissolvable biochar from biochar particles, with bentonite and goethite selected as model minerals. It was found that the presence of soil minerals and Ca2+ reduced the release of dissolvable biochar and enhanced its stability, reducing both chemical oxidation and biodegradation extents. The interactions between soil minerals and dissolvable biochar play a crucial role in the long-term carbon sequestration capability of biochar.

Microscopic mechanism about the selective adsorption of Cr(VI) from salt solution on O-rich and N-rich biochars

Nan Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the selective adsorption of Cr(VI) on O-rich and N-rich biochars under strong competition of anions using spectroscopic and molecular simulation approaches. It was found that O-rich biochars promoted Cr(VI) removal through surface complexation and strong H-bonds, while N-rich biochars were suppressed by coexisting anions due to weaker H-bonds. This study provides a novel approach for evaluating the roles of biochar functional groups in the removal of Cr(VI) from complex environmental systems at a quantitative, molecular level.

Cadmium removal by MgCl2 modified biochar derived from crayfish shell waste: Batch adsorption, response surface analysis and fixed bed filtration

Dawei Zhang et al.

Summary: Cadmium (Cd) pollution is a serious environmental problem with risks to water bodies and human health. This study investigated Cd(II) adsorption onto MgCl2 modified biochar, finding that MgC600 had a higher adsorption capacity due to enhanced ion exchange ability. A quadratic regression model accurately predicted the optimal adsorption conditions, and a new BJP model was proposed for fixed bed filtration process, accurately describing and promoting its application in wastewater treatment.

A holistic understanding of cobalt cycling and limiting roles in the eutrophic Lake Taihu

Xianfang Fan et al.

Summary: This study investigated cobalt cycling in the eutrophic Meiliang Bay of Lake Taihu, revealing that cobalt in sediments is primarily controlled by manganese redox cycling. Despite minimal changes in dissolved and labile cobalt over one year, cobalt levels in the sediment-overlying water system were strongly regulated by cyanobacterial uptake, suggesting cobalt may be a potential limiting nutrient for cyanobacterial blooms.

Adsorption behaviors of Au(III) onto humic acid extracted from gold ore: Adsorptive kinetics, isotherm and mechanismy

Huiqun Niu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the adsorption characteristics of humic acid extracted from refractory carbon-containing gold concentrate, establishing adsorption kinetic and isotherm models. Various analytical methods were used to analyze the gold-adsorbing process. Results demonstrated that the adsorption behavior of the extracted humic acid for gold followed pseudo-second-order kinetics and Freundlich model, indicating a spontaneous and endothermic process. Furthermore, the thermodynamic study showed an increase in isosteric heat of adsorption with higher adsorption amount, suggesting a chemisorption-driven process with complexation between Au (III) and functional groups.

A highly porous animal bone-derived char with a superiority of promoting nZVI for Cr(VI) sequestration in agricultural soils

Kai Liu et al.

Summary: The study developed a porous bone char (BC) to support nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) for the remediation of Cr(VI) pollution in water and paddy soil under anaerobic conditions. BC/nZVI demonstrated a higher removal capacity for Cr(VI) compared to nZVI, with the best utilization rate at nZVI loading of 15% (BC/nZVI15). The presence of coexisting ions and humic acid can inhibit the removal of Cr(VI) with BC/nZVI15, while reduction and coprecipitation were identified as the dominant mechanisms of Cr(VI) removal.

Evolution of redox activity of biochar during interaction with soil minerals: Effect on the electron donating and mediating capacities for Cr (VI) reduction

Zibo Xu et al.

Summary: The study found that biochar in soil is susceptible to natural aging and influences from soil minerals, which can alter its redox activity. Co-aging with different minerals showed varied effects on the reduction of Cr(VI) by biochar, with Fe(III) causing the lowest reduction rate constant. The electron mediating capacity of biochar decreased after aging alone or co-aging with Al, Ca, and kaolinite, while co-aging with Fe(III) and Mn(II) facilitated the electron transfer process significantly.
