Fouling resistant, high flux, charge tunable hybrid ultrafiltration membranes using polymer chains grafted graphene oxide for NOM removal

Mahendra Kumar et al.

Summary: The study introduced a novel fouling resistant, high flux, and high rejection hybrid ultrafiltration polysulfone membranes with charge tunable channels using functionalized polymer chains grafted graphene oxide (SPK-g-GO) nanosheets for natural organic matter removal. The membranes exhibited altered surface texture and hydrophilicity with SPK-g-GO incorporation, resulting in significantly improved water flux and fouling resistance. The hybrid membrane with 4% SPK-g-GO loading showed remarkable performance in natural organic matter removal and maintained stable retention rate during long-term filtration tests.

Summary: Efforts are underway to commercialize MBR technologies developed at laboratory and pilot scale, with a focus on improving efficiency, sustainability, reliability, and cost-effectiveness. The adoption of AI is expected to have a positive impact on these criteria. However, further efforts are needed to improve the match between AI predictions and experimental results, especially in dealing with high strength and highly polluted effluents.

Enhanced removal of aqueous phenol with polyimide ultrafiltration membranes embedded with deep eutectic solvent-coated nanosilica

Jisha Kuttiani Ali et al.

Summary: The novel composite UF membranes with silica-based nanofillers show enhanced vacuum-filtration removal of small polar organics from water. The DES@SiO2@PI UF membranes exhibit exceptional water permeate flux and removal efficiency for phenol compared with native polymer membranes, with an optimum nanofiller loading of 2 wt%.

Polyimide ultrafiltration membrane embedded with reline-functionalized nanosilica for the remediation of pharmaceuticals in water

Jisha Kuttiani Ali et al.

Summary: This study introduces the use of ChCl-U DES in PI UF membranes to enhance the filtration removal of pharmaceuticals. The optimal performance membrane required a 2 wt% loading of ChCl-U@SiO2 nanofiller. The study provides valuable insights for the potential application of DES in membrane-based removal of pharmaceutical pollutants from water.

Fabrication of novel polyethersulfone (PES) hybrid ultrafiltration membranes with superior permeability and antifouling properties using environmentally friendly sulfonated functionalized polydopamine nanofillers

Parashuram Kallem et al.

Summary: The novel environmental-friendly sulfonated functionalized polydopamine (SPDA) nanocomposite synthesized as a nanofiller for ultrafiltration (UF) membranes significantly enhances water permeability and antifouling properties. The results demonstrate that incorporating SPDA nanofillers has great potential to improve the performance of polyethersulfone (PES) membranes in wastewater treatment applications.
