Cost-effective optimized scleroglucan production by Sclerotium rolfsii ATCC 201126 at bioreactor scale. A quantity-quality assessment

Alejandra L. Valdez et al.

Summary: Exopolysaccharide (EPS) secretion by Sclerotium rolfsii ATCC 201126 in submerged cultures was evaluated by reducing carbon source without compromising EPS yields. Purified EPSs showed high purity and consistent rheological properties under different operating conditions, indicating the feasibility of selecting proper production conditions based on polyphasic EPS analysis.

Investigation of gas-liquid mass transfer and power consumption characteristics in jet-flow high shear mixers

Yudong Liu et al.

Summary: Experimental measurements were conducted to investigate the effects of operating conditions and structural configurations of the rotor-stator head on gas-liquid characteristics and power consumption of the jet-flow high shear mixer (HSM). The results showed that gas-liquid mass transfer performance and power consumption were significantly influenced by structural parameters and increasing gas flow rate or reducing surface tension could enhance mass transfer performance. Dimensionless correlations were established based on the experimental data to predict Pog and kLa, providing useful guidance for scaleup design and optimization of the jet-flow HSM.

The Impact of Fluid Dynamic Stress in Stirred Bioreactors - The Scale of the Biological Entity: A Personal View

Alvin W. Nienow

Summary: Since the beginning of industrial biotechnology, there has been a perception that stirring can cause damage to biological entities, known as 'shear damage'. Over time, it has been realized that the simple explanation is not entirely accurate, and other factors need to be considered, including the relationship between the size of biological entities and the turbulence scale.
