Impact simulation and ballistic analysis of B4C composite armour based on target plate tests

Yongjie Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the ballistic performance of lightweight composite armour systems composed of B4C ceramic and composite back panels. Numerical simulations were used to verify the accuracy of the material models and provided a basis and technical means for the design and optimization of lightweight composite armour.

Effect of Cover Plate on the Ballistic Performance of Ceramic Armor

Miao Sun et al.

Summary: The study shows that fixing cover plates with confining tubes can increase pressure on SiC targets and prolong dwell time of tungsten rods, leading to higher ballistic performance. Additionally, the transition impact velocities for SiC targets with fixed cover plates have stable growth rates and are lower compared to those with free cover plates. Thickness thresholds exist for both fixed and free cover plates, with the ideal thickness for cover plates ranging from 3 mm to 5 mm for optimal ballistic performance and economy.

Influence of cover thickness on the ballistic performance of silicon carbide subjected to large-scale tungsten projectiles

Dujun Luo et al.

Summary: Alloy was found to be the optimal metal cover material for SiC against tungsten-heavy alloy projectiles. The study focused on the influence of Al alloy plate thickness on SiC’s ballistic performance and determined 4mm as the optimal thickness. The buffering effect of cover plates on structural ballistic performance varied with projectile impact velocities.

On the improvement of the ballistic performance of a silicon carbide tile through pre-stress: Experiments and simulations

P. J. Hazell et al.

Summary: Pre-stressing technique was used to improve the ballistic performance of circular silicon carbide tile against a 12-mm spherical steel projectile. The technique involved a heat-shrunk steel collar to achieve confining pre-stress, which was evaluated through neutron diffraction. Ballistic experiments and simulations showed that pre-stress could reduce crack propagation and alter paths of damage by increasing negative triaxiality.

Effects of the adhesive layer on the multi-hit ballistic performance of ceramic/metal composite armors

Yonghua Shen et al.

Summary: The study investigates the effects of adhesive layer on the multi-hit ballistic performance of ceramic/metal composite armors. Different types and thickness of adhesive layer were systematically studied, revealing that polyurethane targets demonstrate superior multi-hit ballistic performance but also result in extensive damage to surrounding ceramic tiles. The results indicate that the detachment of ceramic decreases sharply with increasing bonding strength and failure displacement, with optimal adhesive layer thickness identified as 2.0 mm for better multi-hit ballistic performance.
