In-situ X-ray tomographic imaging of microstructure evolution of fly ash and slag particles in alkali-activated fly ash-slag paste

Guohao Fang et al.

Summary: The in-situ investigation using X-ray microcomputed tomography revealed that the dissolution of fly ash and slag particles in alkaliactivated fly ash-slag paste is not uniform. Smaller particles dissolve faster due to their relatively high specific area. The formation of reaction products mostly accumulates within the boundary of original particles, serving as a barrier to prevent further dissolution. The interaction between fly ash and slag in terms of microstructure evolution becomes more apparent at later ages.

Synthesis of alkali-activated uncalcined Pisha sandstone cement composites

Jingliang Dong et al.

Summary: This study utilized natural Pisha sandstone to produce a novel alkali-activated cement, investigating its rheological properties, compressive strength, hydration properties, etc. It was found that under certain conditions, AUPC could replace ordinary Portland cement, but high activator concentration or long curing time could increase porosity and lower compressive strength.

Effect of reactive MgO on hydration and properties of alkali-activated slag pastes with different activators

Juan He et al.

Summary: The type of activator used significantly affects the properties of alkali-activated slag cement. Reactive MgO has different effects on AAS cement depending on the activator used. The addition of reactive MgO decreases the fluidity and setting time of AAS paste, while increasing the compressive strength in certain activators. Reactive MgO also enhances the hydration process and promotes the formation of more hydration products, leading to densification of the AAS matrix.

Properties and mechanism of the compound MgO expansive agent (CMEA) produced by calcining the mixture of dolomite and serpentine tailings

Fengze Cao et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new method to produce compound MgO expansive agents using cheap tailings. The hydration activity of CMEA decreases with the rise of calcining temperature, and incorporating 20% CMEA into cement slightly reduces mechanical strength while significantly increasing volume expansion.

Hydration and microstructural characteristics of MgO in the presence of metakaolin and silica fume

Vineet Shah et al.

Summary: This paper presents the characteristics of hydration products and microstructural development of reactive MgO in the presence of metakaolin (MK) and silica fume (SF), including thermodynamic modeling. It was found that the hydration of MgO-MK mixes led to the formation of hydrotalcite-like phase, brucite, and M-S-H, resulting in a low porosity microstructure and higher compressive strength compared to MgO-SF mixes. The bound water content of hydration products showed a reasonable relationship with compressive strength for both SF and MK mixes.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of MC and TRI on the pore structure evolution of HPC using LF-NMR technique, revealing that the combination of MC and TRI can significantly reduce pore size and porosity of HPC. Additionally, the porosity of mortar containing both TRI and MC decreased and then increased with curing temperature, while MPPD increased continuously.

Evidence of formation of an amorphous magnesium silicate (AMS) phase during alkali activation of (Na-Mg) aluminosilicate glasses

Harisankar Sreenivasan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the reaction products in alkali activated materials (AAMs) synthesized from (Na-Mg) aluminosilicate glasses, revealing the existence of an amorphous magnesium silicate (AMS) phase instead of magnesium silicate hydrate (M-S-H) in Mg-containing AAMs. The formation of AMS is driven by the high charge density of the Mg cation, while the absence of hydrotalcite-group phases is attributed to aluminum depletion caused by zeolite formation.

Chemo-mechanical properties of alkali-activated slag/fly ash paste incorporating white mud

Renjuan Sun et al.

Summary: The study examined the feasibility of incorporating white mud into a blended slag/fly ash alkali activated binder system, finding that compressive strength decreases with increasing white mud content, but the paste containing 50% white mud is still comparable to Portland cement 42.5. Additionally, XRD, TGA, FTIR, SEM/EDX tests were performed to analyze the reaction products, showing that the main reaction product is a C-(N)-A-S-H type gel and that the formation of hydrotalcite is promoted with an increase in white mud replacement. Nanoindentation revealed a shift towards lower values in both elastic modulus and hardness with the addition of white mud.
