Combined impact of carbonation and crack width on the Chloride Penetration and Corrosion Resistance of Concrete Structures

Abbas S. AL-Ameeri et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of concrete carbonation on chloride penetration resistance and corrosion rate in RC structures with service-related cracks. Results demonstrate that carbonation significantly increases chloride penetration depth, chloride concentration profile, and corrosion potential when exposed to chloride environment, compared to uncarbonated concrete samples.

Effect of seawater as mixing water on the hydration behaviour of tricalcium aluminate

Yamei Cai et al.

Summary: This study found that seawater delayed the hydration of C3A by contaminating reactive sites on its surface with co-existing Ca2+ and SO42-, as well as prolonging the induction period with precipitation of Mg(OH)2. Cl-was observed to preferentially react with C3A to form Friedel's salt, leading to an accumulation of Al3+ in solution and hindering further dissolution of C3A.

Effectiveness of UHPFRC cover in delaying bar corrosion

Nicolas El-Joukhadar et al.

Summary: This study investigated the efficiency of UHPFRC materials in mitigating reinforcement corrosion in chloride environments. The findings showed that these materials were able to fully mitigate corrosion in the absence of service cracks, but their effectiveness decreased with increasing crack width. Steel-fiber reinforced specimens exhibited higher resistivity compared to PVA-fiber reinforced specimens in the presence of cracks due to the hydrophilic nature of the synthetic fibers.

Relation between resistivity of concrete and corrosion rate of reinforcing bars caused by galvanic cells in the presence of chloride

Dmitry S. Shevtsov et al.

Summary: The experimental study and theoretical analysis showed a direct proportionality between the resistivity of concrete and the rate of reinforcement corrosion. The role of ohmic resistance in the corrosion process was confirmed, but the hypothesis of ohmic control in microcells was ruled out.

Experimental and numerical analysis of the effects of different repair mortars on the controlling factors of macro-cell corrosion in concrete patch repair

Parviz Ghoddousi et al.

Summary: The study investigates the effect of different repair mortars on the controlling factors of macro-cell corrosion current, and finds that cathodic polarization resistance is always the dominant factor. Additionally, the study shows that Ohmic drop has the lowest contribution to controlling macro-cell current.

Summary: This study focused on improving the DC accelerated corrosion method for accurate partial corrosion process on full-scale reinforced concrete (RC) structures, with a particular emphasis on the impact of applied voltage on current efficiency and electrode reactions. The results demonstrated that electrolyte circulation can enhance the applicability of the test, with reduced applied voltage helping to overcome concrete resistance.

Development and characteristics of ultra high-performance lightweight cementitious composites (UHP-LCCs)

Jian-Xin Lu et al.

Summary: A new design concept of ultra high-performance lightweight cementitious composite (UHP-LCC) was proposed in this study, incorporating micro-sized hollow particles with a high strength shell (HGM) into an ultra-high performance cementitious composite (UHPC). The HGM exhibited some pozzolanic reactivity, facilitating chemical reactions that improved mechanical properties, while the use of microspheres with high stiff shells significantly enhanced fundamental properties of the UHP-LCCs.

Influence of a Superplasticizer on Initial Corrosion of Galvanized Steel Bars in Concrete Pore Solution

Haibing Zheng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of a naphthalene sulfonate-based superplasticizer on the initial corrosion of galvanized steel bars in a simulated concrete pore solution. It was found that the addition of superplasticizer delayed the initiation of corrosion and inhibited hydrogen evolution. The protective property of the CHZ passive layer on galvanized steel varied with the concentration of superplasticizer, and the inhibition effects of the superplasticizer on the initial corrosion will improve the quality of the steel-concrete interface.
