Depression phenotype identified by using single nucleotide exact amplicon sequence variants of the human gut microbiome

Bruce R. Stevens et al.

Summary: This study used high throughput microbiome sequencing data combined with machine learning methods to investigate the human gut microbiome, demonstrating that individuals with a depression phenotype can be accurately identified using ASV data from the gut microbiome. Differential abundance analysis and metabolic pathway network analysis can significantly differentiate between individuals with a depression phenotype and healthy reference subjects based on microbiome data.

An integrated meta-analysis of peripheral blood metabolites and biological functions in major depressive disorder

Juncai Pu et al.

Summary: Our study identified 23 differentially expressed metabolites in peripheral blood between MDD patients and controls. MDD patients showed higher levels of certain substances such as asymmetric dimethylarginine, tyramine, and 2-hydroxybutyric acid, and lower levels of others such as l-acetylcarnitine and l-methionine. l-tryptophan and kynurenic acid were consistently downregulated in MDD patients. The results suggest that metabolic changes in peripheral blood, particularly decreased levels of l-tryptophan and kynurenic acid, are associated with MDD.

Disrupted rich-club network organization and individualized identification of patients with major depressive disorder

Xinyi Liu et al.

Summary: Using resting-state functional MRI and diffusion tensor imaging, this study found that MDD patients exhibited disrupted structural rich-club organization and modularity, as well as reduced coupling between structural and functional connectivity. These results suggest that the disrupted rich-club structural organization could potentially serve as a biological marker for identifying MDD patients.

SLC6A20 transporter: a novel regulator of brain glycine homeostasis and NMDAR function

Mihyun Bae et al.

Summary: Research has shown that SLC6A20A is an amino acid transporter that regulates proline and glycine balance in the brain and NMDAR function. Mutant PTEN protein may enhance abnormal expression of SLC6A20A transcript and protein by increasing binding to the Slc6a20a gene. Modulating SLC6A20A can normalize NMDAR currents and restore behavior in mice.

Obesity-associated deficits in inhibitory control are phenocopied to mice through gut microbiota changes in one-carbon and aromatic amino acids metabolic pathways

Maria Arnoriaga-Rodriguez et al.

Summary: The study revealed the relationship between inhibitory control and obesity, as well as the interactions between gut microbiota, metabolomics, and brain structure. Metabolic pathway alterations associated with obesity were found to be linked to inhibitory control, and results were validated in mice through fecal microbiota transplantation.

The gut microbiota in anxiety and depression - A systematic review

Carra A. Simpson et al.

Summary: The gut microbiota is associated with anxiety and depressive disorders, with inconsistent findings in diversity but potential links to peripheral inflammation influencing the brain's pathophysiology. Future research should consider confounders like diet and medications, and investigate microorganism function.
