Multiple Ecosystem Effects of Extreme Weather Events in the Arctic

T. R. Christensen et al.

Summary: The Arctic is experiencing warmer and wetter conditions, leading to severe implications for high Arctic ecosystems due to extreme precipitation events. Examples in 2015 and 2018 showed rapid transformation in ecosystem functioning, impacting CO2 uptake and methane release. Climate warming and changing weather patterns will have significant implications for undisturbed tundra ecosystems.

Modelling multi-hazard threats to cultural heritage sites and environmental sustainability: The present and future scenarios

Asish Saha et al.

Summary: Cultural heritage sites in mountainous regions face threats from earthquakes, rainfall, and climate change, leading to environmental degradation. Conservation and management of mountain environments are essential for the survival of the global ecosystem. This study focused on mapping multi-hazard susceptibility and risk assessment in famous cultural heritage sites in the eastern Himalayan region, using advanced techniques to identify vulnerable areas and help develop proper management strategies.

Increasing cryospheric hazards in a warming climate

Yongjian Ding et al.

Summary: The cryosphere is an important component of the global climate system and is sensitive to climate warming. Hazards from atmospheric, oceanic, and land cryosphere were summarized, revealing that these hazards may increase in the future due to climate change. The study highlights potential increases in extreme cold events, sea ice decline, glacier collapse, and snowmelt floods as notable impacts of cryospheric changes.

Preliminary assessment of thaw slump hazard to Arctic cultural heritage in Nordenskiold Land, Svalbard

Ionut Cristi Nicu et al.

Summary: Permafrost-dependent landslides, such as retrogressive thaw slumps (RTSs), are dynamic landforms in the Arctic due to warming climate. This study conducted a preliminary assessment on previous thaw slump activity in Nordenskiold Land area of Svalbard, revealing a limited co-existence of RTS scars and cultural heritage sites in specific regions. The results, although preliminary, can be utilized by stakeholders in prioritizing future mitigation measures and disaster risk reduction.

Evaluation of multi-hazard map produced using MaxEnt machine learning technique

Narges Javidan et al.

Summary: This study focused on creating a multi-hazard map in a watershed area in the Golestan Province, Iran, integrating susceptibility maps for flood, landslides, and gully erosion. The research demonstrated that 60% of the area is subjected to hazards, with landslides covering up to 21.2% of the entire territory. This type of multi-hazard map may serve as a useful tool for local administrators to identify areas susceptible to hazards on a large scale.

Coastal Erosion of Arctic Cultural Heritage in Danger: A Case Study from Svalbard, Norway

Ionut Cristi Nicu et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the impact of shoreline changes on coastal cultural heritage sites in Hiorthhamn (Svalbard) over a period of 93 years. The research revealed an increasing trend of shoreline erosion and predicted that half of the protected cultural heritage objects would disappear in the next decade without mitigation measures.

Is digital shoreline analysis system fit for gully erosion assessment?

Ionut Cristi Nicu

Summary: The study analyzed gully erosion in the Moldavian Plateau using the DSAS tool, finding that specific adjustments are needed for dendritic gullies, lower smoothing distance for linear gullies, and higher values for smoothing distance and transect spacing for linear gullies evolved into dendritic ones. The average erosion rates obtained align closely with existing literature, indicating the suitability of using DSAS for gully erosion assessment in the field.

Anthropogenic particles in sediment from an Arctic fjord

France Collard et al.

Summary: Research on plastic pollution in the Arctic is limited, with this study focusing on microplastics and other anthropogenic particles like dyed fibers in sediments from Kongsfjorden. Analysis revealed the presence of various APs, including microplastics, with different sizes and distribution patterns. This data provides insight into the presence of plastic and other APs in a remote fjord in Svalbard.
