Summary: There is a clear link between excessive alcohol consumption and cardiovascular disease (CVD), but the effects of moderate alcohol consumption on CVD are still uncertain. Some studies have shown that moderate drinkers have a lower risk of coronary heart disease and myocardial infarction, but there is still ambiguity about the effects of alcohol on other CVDs and all-cause mortality. More research, including long-term randomized controlled trials, studies on genetic polymorphisms, and policy evaluations, is needed to provide the best available evidence.

Association of Habitual Alcohol Intake With Risk of Cardiovascular Disease

Summary: Observational studies have suggested cardiovascular benefits associated with light alcohol consumption, while genetic analyses have indicated a possible causal link between alcohol intake and increased cardiovascular disease risk. This cohort study using the UK Biobank examined the association of habitual alcohol intake with cardiovascular disease risk, showing that light to moderate alcohol consumption was associated with healthier lifestyle factors, but genetic predisposition to alcohol intake was associated with increased risk of hypertension and coronary artery disease across different levels of intake.
