Sugarcane bagasse waste fibers as novel thermal insulation and sound-absorbing materials for application in sustainable buildings

Shahrzad Mehrzad et al.

Summary: The study found that fibrous samples made from sugarcane bagasse waste fibers exhibited high thermal and acoustic performance, especially in the low- and mid-frequency ranges. Compared with natural and nonrenewable counterparts, sugarcane bagasse waste as an innovative sustainable construction material showed competitive performance in terms of thermal and acoustical characteristics.

Natural fibro-granular composite as a novel sustainable sound-absorbing material

Seyed Ehsan Samaei et al.

Summary: An innovative natural fibro-granular composite made of kenaf fibers and waste rice husk granules was developed and optimized for its sound absorption properties. The optimized composite demonstrated superior acoustic behavior compared to samples made of 100% kenaf or 100% rice husk. Empirical and phenomenological models were used to predict the frequency-dependent sound absorption coefficient of the optimized material, with the Johnson-Champoux-Allard model showing the best prediction performance.

Experimental and modeling investigation of the acoustic behavior of sustainable kenaf/yucca composites

Seyed Ehsan Samaei et al.

Summary: The study explores the acoustic behavior of kenaf and yucca waste fiber composites, finding that samples with 100% kenaf fibers exhibit promising performance at low and mid-frequency bands. Decreasing kenaf content in the composite samples shifts the absorption peak towards the high-frequency region. The Johnson-Champoux-Allard (JCA) model closely follows the trend of experimental data in the frequency range of 80-6300 Hz.

Wool waste used as sustainable nonwoven for building applications

Chiara Rubino et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the potential conversion of wool waste into new raw materials suitable for building components by exploring the hygrothermal, acoustic and nonacoustic properties of nonwovens made of 100% wool waste fibers thermally bonded with polyester/copolyester bi-component fibers. The results showed that the tested nonwovens may represent a valid alternative for building applications, thus indicating a new research area in the field.

Porous resin-bonded recycled denim composite as an efficient sound-absorbing material

Pouya Hassani et al.

Summary: This study investigated the use of phenolic resin-bonded recycled denim as a potential replacement for synthetic sound absorbers. The results showed that the recycled denim composites could compete with commercial glass wool samples for noise control, while being environmentally friendly and economically viable. The study found that both bulk density and resin content have a significant effect on the sound absorption coefficient (SAC), with SAC increasing with increasing areal density and bulk density, especially at higher bulk densities.

Sound absorption and thermal insulation characteristics of fabrics made of pure and crossbred sheep waste wool

Zahra Mohammadi Ghermezgoli et al.

Summary: The study showed that crossbreeding improved fiber fineness and subsequently enhanced the sound absorption performance of woolen fabrics. Fabrics made from waste wool demonstrated better thermal insulation effects, and were found to have comparable acoustic and thermal properties to traditional mineral/wool and glass fiber materials. Waste wool was highlighted as an environmentally friendly insulation material that is also cost-effective, biodegradable, and readily available.

Use of date palm waste fibers as sound absorption material

Ebrahim Taban et al.

Summary: This study focused on creating sound-absorbing panels from date palm waste fibers and evaluating their performance, finding that samples with a thickness of 55 mm and a density of 175 kg/m3 had the best sound-absorbing performance. Additionally, the acoustic behavior of the new material was examined in a reverberation room, and the acoustic performance of the panels in a conference hall was modeled to assess improvements in room acoustics properties.
