Numerical and experimental study of air containment systems in legacy data centers focusing on thermal performance and air leakage

Jinkyun Cho et al.

Summary: Hot-aisle containment (HAC) and cold-aisle containment (CAC) are vital techniques for data center cooling, but issues with airtightness can impact their effectiveness. Studies have shown that selecting HAC can improve thermal performance, especially under high air leakage conditions.

Hybrid surrogate model for online temperature and pressure predictions in data centers

Sahar Asgari et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the issues in data center design and operation, and develops a hybrid surrogate model to accurately predict temperature distribution within a data center. By combining data-driven models and thermofluid transport relations, more effective optimization of airflow distribution, reduced energy consumption, and improved cooling configuration design in data centers can be achieved.

A gray-box model for real-time transient temperature predictions in data centers

Sahar Asgari et al.

Summary: This article discusses the use of solutions such as continuous performance monitoring, automated diagnostics, and optimal control to improve the energy efficiency of data centers. A gray-box model that combines machine learning with thermofluid transport equations is developed to predict transient temperatures in server CPUs and cold air inlet to the servers, showing superior performance compared to other models in predicting temperatures and detecting cooling unit fan failures in a row-based DC cooling system.

An experimental and numerical investigation of novel solution for energy management enhancement in data centers using underfloor plenum porous obstructions

Mohammad I. Tradat et al.

Summary: This study focuses on improving airflow distribution in data centers by introducing porous partitions in the plenum to eliminate vortices. The results show that these partitions significantly improve pressure distribution, tile airflow delivery, and rack inlet air temperature. A geometrical parametric study demonstrates that an ideal design can enhance the Supply Heat Index (SHI) by about 10%, reduce the amount of IT equipment exceeding recommended supply air temperature by about 40%, and cut floor leakage in half.

Numerical and experimental investigation of thermal performance in data center with different deflectors for cold aisle containment

Ping Song et al.

Summary: The study proposed an innovative method of using deflectors in cold aisle containment to improve the uniformity of airflow distribution, enhance the cooling efficiency of airflow, reduce the hotspot area of the racks, and increase the overall thermal environment. Experimental results showed that this method effectively improves the thermal performance and energy efficiency of data centers.
