Impact of vegetation cover loss on surface temperature and carbon emission in a fastest-growing city, Cumilla, Bangladesh

Abdullah-Al- Faisal et al.

Summary: Human pressures, changing hydrology and land resources have a significant impact on the carbon chain and ecosystem resilience. Urbanization leads to vegetation cover reduction, accelerating carbon emissions and increasing land surface temperature. This study used remote sensing and GIS techniques to estimate Land Use/Land Cover changes in Cumilla from 1994 to 2019, finding a concerning decrease in vegetation cover, urban expansion, and continuous rise in land surface temperature.

The operational role of remote sensing in assessing and predicting land use/land cover and seasonal land surface temperature using machine learning algorithms in Rajshahi, Bangladesh

Abdulla-Al Kafy et al.

Summary: Human activities have increased carbon dioxide emissions, leading to a rise in temperatures. By integrating remote sensing data with primary datasets, the study predicted the impacts of urbanization and temperature rise in Bangladesh on land use and land surface temperature, showing that land use changes contribute to rising surface temperatures, with heat waves being a significant influencing factor.

Evidence of urban heat island impacts on the vegetation growing season length in a tropical city

Peter Kabano et al.

Summary: This study examined the vegetation phenological responses to urban form, distance from the city centre and surface temperatures in the tropical city of Kampala, Uganda. The researchers found that the growing season length increased along the urban-rural gradient and decreased as land surface temperatures rose.

Spatial and Temporal Analysis of Surface Urban Heat Island and Thermal Comfort Using Landsat Satellite Images between 1989 and 2019: A Case Study in Tehran

Faezeh Najafzadeh et al.

Summary: The study mapped and monitored the spatio-temporal variations of Surface Urban Heat Island (SUHI) and thermal comfort in Tehran from 1989 to 2019, using Landsat images. Results showed an overall increase in SUHI intensities over the past three decades, primarily due to decreased vegetation cover and urban expansion. Summer and winter recorded the highest and lowest SUHI magnitudes respectively in 2019, while there was a noticeable degradation in thermal comfort throughout the city over the decade. An evaluation of the relationships between various air pollutants and SUHI intensities suggested positive correlations that could inform mitigation strategies for sustainable urban development.

Diurnal and seasonal trends and associated determinants of surface urban heat islands in large Bangladesh cities

Ashraf Dewan et al.

Summary: This study focused on the intensity of surface urban heat island (SUHI) in five major cities in Bangladesh and found that factors such as dense city population, a high degree of imperviousness, and the absence of greenery may contribute to urban warming. The findings of this study will help in developing effective local-scale climate change adaptation plans for the projected substantial increase in urban population in Bangladesh in the future.
