I don't think you belong in here: The impact of gender segregated bathrooms on the safety, health, and equality of transgender people

Jenifer K. McGuire et al.

Summary: This study reflects on the experiences of transgender youth with toilet access in both isolated gender-neutral facilities and standard gender segregated facilities in North America. Transgender youth face barriers to bathroom access, which can have negative impacts on their mental health and educational functioning, as well as threaten their physical safety. The study recommends gender inclusive designs to reduce the isolation of gender-neutral facilities and avoid the backlash associated with gender segregation. In addition to benefiting transgender individuals, gender inclusive bathrooms could also improve the quality of life for parents of small children, people with disabilities and their caregivers, and other marginalized individuals.

Words Aren't Supposed to Hurt, But They Do: Sexual and Gender Minority Youth's Bullying Experiences

Emmett R. Henderson et al.

Summary: Sexual and gender minority youth (SGMY) are more likely to experience bullying and violence, leading to negative mental and physical health outcomes, as well as poor academic performance. This study aimed to qualitatively describe SGMY's experiences of bullying victimization. Through semi-structured interviews, six common experiences of bullying were identified among SGMY participants. These findings support prior research and suggest the development of multi-item scales to quantitatively explore bullying behaviors experienced by SGMY.

Country-level structural stigma, identity concealment, and day-to-day discrimination as determinants of transgender people's life satisfaction

Richard Branstrom et al.

Summary: Discriminatory laws, policies, and population attitudes towards transgender individuals vary greatly across countries, influencing their life satisfaction. Higher structural stigma in a country is associated with lower life satisfaction, mainly due to increased identity concealment. However, identity concealment also leads to lower day-to-day discrimination, thereby protecting against even lower life satisfaction.
