Antagonistic maternal and direct effects of the leptin receptor gene on body weight in pigs

Emma Sole et al.

Summary: Study finds in pigs, maternal genetic effects have negative impacts on offspring weight and growth, possibly due to genetic variations in the leptin receptor gene. This antagonistic relationship is caused by a higher self-maintenance propensity in offspring with certain genetic variations, leading to differences in feed consumption and fatty acid uptake which affect offspring weight at weaning.

Leptin Receptor Compound Heterozygosity in Humans and Animal Models

Claudia Berger et al.

Summary: Leptin and its receptor play crucial roles in regulating food intake, energy expenditure, glucose homeostasis, and fertility. Mutations within leptin or the leptin receptor can result in early-onset obesity and hyperphagia. Recent research has shown that compound heterozygous mutations within the leptin receptor may lead to a considerably more obese phenotype compared to homozygous mutations, sparking interest in exploring the effects of compound heterozygous mutations on health in both human and animal models.

Genetics of Obesity: What We Have Learned Over Decades of Research

Claude Bouchard

Summary: Genetic factors contribute to 40%-50% of variability in body weight status, with higher heritability in individuals with obesity. Different classes of BMI have varying heritability, with at least 15 gene defects linked to monogenic obesity. Common DNA variants account for most of the BMI heritability, while obesity-promoting alleles have larger effects in those prone to obesity.
