Effect of carbonization methods on the properties of tea waste biochars and their application in tetracycline removal from aqueous solutions

Bin Li et al.

Summary: The study investigated the influence of different carbonation methods on the properties and adsorption performance of biochars, finding that the combination of hydrothermal treatment with KHCO3 activation significantly increases the surface area and pore structure of biochar. In terms of adsorbing tetracycline, KHCO3-activated BCs exhibited higher adsorption capacity, with the dominant mechanisms being pore-filling effect and pi - pi interactions.

Enhanced adsorption of tetracycline by the modified tea-based biochar with the developed mesoporous and surface alkalinity

Yongkang Mu et al.

Summary: The tea residue-based biochar Fe-BCK0.5-VB6, obtained through pyrolysis with KOH activation and alkalization with vitamin B6, showed increased specific surface area and expanded mesopore volume for improved adsorption performance on tetracycline. The experimental data fitted best with Avrami-fractional order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm models, indicating multiple kinetic stages and monolayer adsorption process for tetracycline. Various interactions including acid-base reaction, pore filling, electrostatic interactions, pi-pi interactions, and hydrogen bonding forces were involved in the attachment of tetracycline.
